    Abstract

My work focuses on improving systems, making them more efficient and effective (performance engineering). Aiming at making our world - and our lifes - better using engineering solutions. I have worked on engineering applications like, non-destructive testing, sensory substitution, virtual acoustics, and energy solutions. I have used advanced Acoustic Emissions technology to monitor the integrity of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) under multi-axial fatigue, extending its use to battery research, including aluminum-ion and second-life lithium-ion batteries. In sensory substitution, I pioneered an audio-tactile device for visually impaired individuals, enhancing spatial awareness through sound, and developed a device to improve music enjoyment for Cochlear Implant recipients. My virtual acoustics work includes creating realistic sound environments for virtual reality and gaming, ensuring accurate sound reproduction and enhancing user experiences by integrating technology with aesthetic and functional needs. In energy solutions, I have designed systems to repurpose waste heat from space-heating for soil heating, reducing thermal pollution and extending the growing season. I have studied passive thermoelectric generator systems powered by geothermal hot water pipes and biomass gasification processes to develop Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems. Currently, I am focused on designing and testing the thermodynamics and physical strength of battery housings. I lead initiatives to repurpose old EV batteries for stationary energy storage, use batteries to reduce diesel generator oil consumption, and integrate these systems with photovoltaic solutions to improve sustainability.
