Abstract

Brynja Þorgeirsdóttir’s research focuses on emotions, the body, and sensibilities in Old Norse literature; the interaction of prose and poetry in the Íslendingasögur; skaldic poetry; and Old Norse medical and scientific texts. She has published numerous articles and book chapters on these subjects and is co-editor of The Prosimetrum of the Íslendingasögur: Aesthetic and Narrative Effects (De Gruyter, 2024), Saga Emotions (Manchester University Press, 2025), and New Studies on Emotion in Old Norse Literature (Brepols, 2026). She is Co-Investigator, together with Gareth Lloyd Evans (University of Oxford), on the AHRC-funded Old Norse Emotions Network, an international research collaboration exploring the study of emotions in Old Norse literature and culture. She also leads the University of Iceland Research Fund project Old Norse Medical Texts (2026–2028), which investigates vernacular medicine, scientific knowledge, and the transmission of medical learning in medieval Iceland and the wider Nordic world.

Abstract

My research focuses primarily on playwrights from the Restoration (1660-1689) and eighteenth-century. I am particularly interested in women writers, such as Aphra Behn, Margaret Cavendish, and Frances Burney. I have also worked on inheritance in eighteenth-century fiction.I am also interested in key word analysis in relation to seventeenth and eigthteenth-century British literature. My research often focuses on gender and performance. I also write creatively, mainly poetry and children's stories. I have supervised BA and MA creative writing projects (including short story collections and novels). My PhD on women's wit in drama, 1660-1720 is being considered for publication as a book. I am currently researching asides in Restoration drama using key word analysis and editing a new edition of William Wycherley's comedy The Country Wife (1675) with Bloomsbury.
