The MEd programme in mathematics teaching enables students to develop specialised knowledge of mathematics education, with a focus on research and development. Training placements are incorporated into theoretical courses, leaving students well-equipped for work in Icelandic compulsory schools.
The primary purpose of the programme is to provide those who want a career in teaching and mathematics education with a thorough specialist knowledge of mathematics and the pedagogy of mathematics.
Students will be given opportunities to conduct independent research into their own teaching and use the research of others to develop practices in Icelandic schools.
Programme structure
The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study or up to four years of part-time study.
Specialisations
Students choose between the following specialisations based on their academic background:
- Five year teacher education for students with a BEd degree
- General teacher education following BA/BS degree
- Mathematics teaching for licensed teachers
It is important to choose the correct specialisation depending on your academic background.

- Teaching mathematical topics, such as arithmetic, probability and statistics, geometry and algebra, in Icelandic compulsory schools

Organisation of teaching
The programme is taught in Icelandic. Many courses can be completed through distance learning.
Objectives
Students will learn about mathematics and mathematics education, equipping them to teach mathematics in Icelandic compulsory schools.
Other
Upon graduation from teacher education at an Icelandic university, a teacher must possess proficiency in Icelandic equivalent to at least C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR.
