Documents and deadlines

The deadline for sending supporting documents is in the email sent to applicants after they have submitted their application.

Photocopies or scanned transcripts are not valid documents. If satisfactory documentation is not submitted within the deadline your application will NOT be processed. 

It is important to check out the Admission requirements guideline page as there might be specific requirements for you country.

Supporting documents need to be submitted in one of the following ways:

With an electronic signature in pdf format 

Only pdf documents are accepted with application that are digitally signed by the institution and coming from trusted Adobe parties. The document can be attached in the online application form or sent to transcript@hi.is.

Certified documents on paper

Signed and stamped in color by the appropriate institution or an official party, e.g. the magistrate. The documents must be sent by post to the:

It is also possible to hand them to the Service Desk in the University Centre which is in the same building as Student Registration.

Direct online verification database or electronic validation portal 

This applies for example to governmental or institutional online verification portals.
Applicants are required to provide information on the location of the portal and include any information, such as reference number, which is part of the verification process. Students are responsible for all fees associated with this process.

Documents issued by a country's service portal 

Third party service portals such as: Parchment, GradIntelligence, National Student Clearing House, Digitary and Open Certs.

Access to the portal is sent to transcript@hi.is. Applicants are responsible for all fees associated with this process. Make sure that any reference numbers that is needed for the online verification is included in your email.

 

Note! Applicants who are finishing or have finished an undergraduate programme at the University of Iceland after 1980 do not need to submit certified transcripts or diplomas from that study. Photocopies or scanned transcripts are not valid documents.

If you are applying for an undergraduate programme, you will need to submit a matriculation examination certificate or its equivalent. See here the equivalent to the Icelandic matriculation depending on your country of origin. 

If you have not matriculated from an Icelandic upper secondary school, look at the Admission requirements guideline page.

Depending on the study programme, you may also have to submit proof of English proficiency or proof of Icelandic proficiency.

Applying for a graduate programme

If you are applying for a graduate programme, you will need to submit a transcript and diploma from an undergraduate degree (BA/BS/B.Ed).

Attachments

Applicants should have the necessary PDFs ready to uploaded to their online application. A red star next to a PDF field in an online application indicates a required PDF file. Otherwise, providing information is optional.

If any of the following fields are not displayed in the online application process, the faculty in question does not require a PDF with that particular information. However, the faculty might wish to receive the information in another way.

All uploaded files must be PDF files marked with your name and the name of a document, for example:
Jane_Smith_CV.pdf
Jane_Smith_passport.pdf
Jane_Smith_statement.pdf


Not all documents apply to all study programmes. Only send or upload documents listed on the study programme page. 

References

Names and email addresses of two referees. Please type the details into the appropriate fields in the online application. Referees should ideally be the applicant's current or former university instructors or superiors at their place of employment. Referees must not be family members or close friends.

If the study programme requires reference letters and/or forms, the applicant must contact their referees and ask them to send the letters and/or forms by email to transcript@hi.is or directly by post to the University of Iceland.
References must be sent from the official email addresses of Referees, not Hotmail or Gmail addresses.

Supervisor

If your programme requires you to find a supervisor before you apply,  you write the name of your supervisor.

A PDF document outlining information about the applicant's previous education and work experience, along with any information that might support the application.

You are required to submit a statement of your academic interests and future career goals. The statement must be a PDF document.

The required length of the statement varies by study programme. Please contact the relevant faculty for further information if needed.

Diploma and transcript

A scanned copy of undergraduate diploma(s) and an academic transcript in PDF form.

Applicants completing their undergraduate degree must also upload a transcript that includes the courses they are currently registered for, along with a statement confirming that they are expected to graduate.

These transcripts and diploma supplements should be in English, Icelandic, Danish, Swedish or Norwegian. If official records are not available in one of these languages, the originals should be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Passport

Applying for a doctoral programme

If you are applying for a doctoral programme, you will need to submit a transcript and diploma from your previous studies both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Depending on the study programme, you may also have to submit proof of English proficiency.

Applicants may be required to submit certain documents in PDF format. Requirements vary, depending on faculty and/or programme. For a full list of required documents with your application see the study programme page.

If official records are not available in English, Icelandic, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian, the originals should be accompanied by a certified English translation.
