Erasmus+ grants for exchange studies

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. Students at the University of Iceland can apply for exchange studies through Erasmus+ to go on mobility to partner institutions in the Erasmus+ programme countries. The Erasmus+ programme countries include the EU countries, the EFTA countries Norway and Liechtenstein, and Türkiye, Serbia and North-Macedonia.

During exchange studies, tuition fees at the host institution are waived, but students pay the annual registration fee at the University of Iceland. If applying for Erasmus+ exchange studies, students automatically apply for travel and subsistence grants.

  • The subsistence grant for longer stays are from 550-700€ a month.
  • For shorter stays (5-14 days) the grant is 79€ a day and from then onwards (15-30 days) the grant is 56€ a day.
  • The travel grants are from 309-1735€ depending on the destination.

If the travel grant only covers 70% of actual travel costs or less, even though you have chosen the most economical way of travelling, you may apply for additional support for expensive travel. If approved, the increased travel grant will cover up to a maximum of 80% of actual travel costs.

If the participant demonstrates that the main mode of travel has been environmentally friendly (based on the number of kilometers), the travel grant is higher, ranging from 417-1735€.

Students may apply for a top-up grant for students with fewer opportunities. Those who are eligible receive a top-up amount to the subsistence grant.

Students who face barriers to mobility due to disabilities or illness may also apply for inclusion support.

Students may be eligible for inclusion grants due to disability/illness.

UI students can apply for Erasmus+ travel and subsistence grant for exchange at select partner universities in countries outside the Erasmus+ programme countries.
