The main objective is to ensure that digital content on UI web pages is accessible for all users and is designed to consider different users' needs.
The primary user groups that need to be considered are:
- Blind and visually impaired people
- Deaf and hard-of-hearing people
- Dyslexic people
- Epileptic people
- People with short-term or permanent disabilities
- Recent immigrants who do not speak Icelandic as a first language
These groups may need:
- Speech analysers and/or screen readers
- Descriptions of visual content
- Simple language that is easy to understand
- Head mouse or other hands-free keyboard alternatives
- Keyboard-operated mouse emulators
- Other aids and technologies that help users navigate the internet
- Content that moves automatically is kept to a minimum
WCAG standard
The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is an international organisation that develops standards and guidelines for the web. The WCAG standard does not address all the needs of users with disabilities; however, it covers most disabled individuals as well as general web users. It is based on the philosophy of accessibility for all. The WCAG standard is intended to ensure quality and improve access to content for a diverse group of people with disabilities.
University of Iceland staff who work on digital web solutions and website development are expected to familiarise themselves with the WCAG standard and adhere to it.
