This programme is aimed at students who want to pursue general teacher education with a focus on design and woodwork, visual arts, drama, textiles and music.
This programme is at stage 2.1, which means that students take pedagogical courses instead of writing a 30 ECTS thesis.

The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study or up to four years of part-time study.

Admission to the MT programme requires the applicant to have completed an undergraduate degree with a first class grade (7.25).
Applicants should have at least 90 ECTS preparation in a primary school subject at under-graduate level. Applicants with an under-graduate degree in another subject than their chosen field of specialisation in the Teacher Education Programme may have to take extra credits.
After completing a programme in teacher education at an Icelandic university, a teacher should have reached a level of competence in Icelandic that corresponds to a minimum of C1 according to the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR).
120 ECTS credits must be completed for the MT degree.

Singing and choral conducting II (LVG210M, LVG009M, LVG003F)
Subject Singing and vocal training for children and youth in choirs. Focus on individual development of each student in mastering choral conducting techniques that are appropriate for young choral voices.
Students build on previous knowledge in basic conducting techniques and get opportunity to strenthen own competence in a group of peers with expert guidance.

A combination of workshops, home exercises, online meetings and supportive reading materials on voices and choral leading techniques
Music education in groups -Theories and practical methods (LVG210M, LVG009M, LVG003F)
The topic of this course is music learning theories and practical implications. The readings include principles and processes in recent music education theories. Critical theories in music education will be examined and used to explore traditions and conventions in music instruction for children, youth and adults. Students will explore some wide spread methods of music teaching and learning.
Independent project in art and crafts (LVG210M, LVG009M, LVG003F)
Independent projects in collaboration with academics at the Faculty of Subject Teacher Education.
Sociology and philosophy of education (SFG106F)
Content: The main goal of the course is to give insight into the sociology and philosophy of education. Selected sociological and philosophical ideas that are useful to study education and the school reality will be discussed. There is emphasis on three things. A. To understand ideas and concepts og be able to explain them. B. To compare ideas and concepts to the education and the school reality that we are familiar with. C. To think critically about the ideas and the reality that they are meant to throw light on.
Methods: There are weekly lectures and discussions. Lectures will be recorded and uploaded to the course‘s Canvas site. Students study them and then take part in discussions that will not be recorded. At the beginning of the semester students register for discussion groups which are then fixed for the semester. There is obligatory attendance (80%) for discussion classes, but students can choose to attend at Stakkahlíð or in realtime on Zoom. Students do two group assignments, two individual assignments and a final assignment.
Old Craft Traditions in Education (LVG004M, LVG101M)
The course is available for all English-speaking students. The course is without any preliminaries. Maximum number of participants is 12 students. The main goal is to help student develop their skill and knowledge in using Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing. Students get the 3D software Prodesktop for free. The course also deals with the Icelandic pedagogical model for Innovation Education. Students learn to set up applications for design protections and how they can set up courses for the elementary school using the above knowledge. Teaching methods are mainly lectures and workshops in the computer classroom, discussions and homework.
Ideas and evolvement (LVG004M, LVG101M)
The goal:
After this course the student should:
- have added to his or her knowledge and be able to demonstrate and show his or her understanding of the discipline in question within art and vocational training subjects.

Methods and theories within idea development and innovation, their development and use will be introduced.
Individual work – seminar.
Students deal with independent research projects according to an agreement. Research work will be done through practicing the topics in question; the research shall be done in a certificated research method within creative arts , crafts and vocation training with emphasis on fertile and creative thinking and well thought working methods. The student enters an agreement about the dwelling deeper into the discipline, which is taught in kindergarten, primary schools and secondary school. The main factors of the research work are data gathering along with experimental and developmental work. Emphasis is placed on the presentation of the assignment and that students can argue their conclusions and finished assignment.
A seminar is part of the course, which present students the chance to gain experience in introducing the progress or results of the project in front of teachers and fellow students. The goal of the seminar is to help students in the their discipline’s discourse and in academic discourse so that they gain a deeper understanding the subject. The seminar will be advertised and open to all.
Working methods: Lectures, data gathering, written and graphical registration, written account, practical assignments, discussions and a seminar.
Design history (LVG005M, LVG008M)
Students will work with ideas and design in connection with clothing and textiles, patterns, colors and shapes, fashion design, look and format. They also experiments with textile methods and textile materials. Special emphasis is placed on the work process from the idea of implementation and registration of information. Students will work on organized research and development work. Experiments in various methods in textile and clothing will be linked to historical and contemporary trends. Emphasis is also placed on the preparation and presentation of projects.
Designhistory - fashion, textiles and furniture (LVG005M, LVG008M)
Emphasis is placed on the history of Egyptian design to the present day, focusing on clothing and utilities. The furniture and building history will also be seen in the context of decorations in homes such as upholstery and curtains. in an international context compared to the development of clothing and textile history in Iceland and connections with the economy, culture, museums and education.The program is organized with lectures and practical research projects involving a wide range of data collection and presentation of projects.
Learning theories: Application and research (MVS009F)
Objectives
The objectives of the course are threefold. First, to provide insight into selected learning theories. Second, to enable students to gain understanding of how these theories can be applied to upbringing, teaching, and the organization of learning for people of all ages. Third, to increase knowledge of research on the effects of different approaches to teaching and evidence-based practices to reach a variety of learning objectives.
Content
- Among the main learning theories covered in the course are those from the cognitive, behavioural, and motivational domains.
- Main concepts related to the learning theories will be introduced and discussed in relation to how learning can be defined in different ways.
- Students will read research articles where these learning theories are studied and applied in practice.
- Emphasis will be placed on understanding what constitutes evidence-based practice.
- Students will design a learning plan for a student or a group of students, based upon one of the learning theories approaches discussed in the course. Through this assignment the students will deepen their understanding of the learning theory in question and how to apply it in practice.
Learning and teaching: Supporting children with special needs (MAL102F)
In this course students explore teaching of diverse groups in inclusive settings, emphasizing strategies to address diverse educational and sociological needs of students, guided by human values, democracy and social justice. The emphasis is on evidence-based strategies to address the most common students´ special needs related to reading difficulties, behavioral difficulties, attention deficit, hyperactivity, and autism spectrum disorder. At the same time the use of respectful, person-first language, putting strengths and talents of students in the foreground, is stressed. Multicultural teaching and teaching of students learning Icelandic as a second language will be addressed. Students will be introduced to classroom management strategies, individualized behavior support, multi-disciplinary and parent collaboration. The course focus is on inclusive, evidence-based practices that aim to provide students with special needs opportunities equal to those of their classmates.
Distance Education (SNU008F)
Issues, concepts and theories in the field of distance education will be explored. Development and trends will be examined from the emphasis on independent study to emphasis on social activities and shared knowledge construction online and global. The focus will also be on research on distance education at different school levels in Iceland and other countries, distance learners and their needs, and teaching methods with different types of media. The design of distance or online courses and programs will be explored as well as international standards for such courses.
Students participate in online synchronous and asynchronous discussion about theory and practice concerning distance education (DE), engage in problem-based learning (group work) and do an individual project that could involve design of a DE course, a study concerning DE, or a paper on topics related to DE.
Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in Education and School Development (SNU007F)
The course focuses on:

- ICT-related policy, curriculum and school practice
- Concepts, theories and research related to the use of ICT in schools
- technology integration in schools
- teaching methods, professional development of teachers, software and digital learning materials

Approach:
Reading and discussion about curriculum, policy, theory, research and practice. Students work alone or in smaller groups on literature research and introduce various topics of their choice. They share their ideas and experiences of ICT uses in learning and teaching and contribute to the construction of a learning and professional community in the area of ICT in education.
The Spectrum of Teaching Methods - Differentiated Instruction (KME205F)
This course deals with the spectrum of teaching methods from direct and formal approaches to informal methods. Emphasis is put on theoretical underpinnings and research on teaching methods, especially Icelandic research. Special attention is put on examining differentiated and responsive approaches (such as the open school concept, flexible teaching, cooperation, multi-age teaching, problem-based learning, holistic education, project-based learning, negotiating the curriculum and authentic learning).
Working in inclusive practices (KME115F)
The course aims to prepare participants to draw on their resources in their work with diverse groups of students. In the course, we draw on inclusive education theories and research, emphasizing a holistic and creative approach to preparation and teaching at the forefront. Furthermore, a focus is put on teaching strategies and educative assessment that works for diverse groups of students, and adapting teaching and learning to students with special needs.
Content
The focus of the course is on inclusive practices. How to create a learning environment that cares for all students learning is introduced. The focus is also on collaboration with parents, colleagues, professionals, and paraprofessionals.
Work process
The course is a blended course online and on campus. It is divided into four main themes. All the themes connect to teaching in inclusive educational settings. The focus on each theme is three or four weeks.
The teaching is through lectures, projects, collaboration, discussions in class, on canvas, and in formal assignments. The course is grounded in students' independence, responsibility, and participation.

This course explores the potential and constraints of instructional design and digital media in educational contexts. Open project approaches and the value of digital communities sharing open learning materials, will also be introduced.
Textile art and design in a historical context (LVG108F, LVG106M)
Emphasis is placed on historical examination of older and new trends and currents in textile art works, fashion and design in the context of Icelandic textiles and clothing history as a source of new ideas. Emphasis is placed on originality and creative work methods in one's own intellectual works. The work process is based on conceptual work, source collection and processing as well as research and experimental work. Students work with design and decoration possibilities in two- and three-dimensional forming based on the theoretical basis of textiles. Students work professionally on the presentation of their work, which is followed by exhibition. Reports are made with pedagogical aspects and teaching assignments with an emphasis on the historical connection of textiles: fashion, design and art.
Creative textile recycling (LVG108F, LVG106M)
Course description in English:* The subject of the course is the creative reuse of textile products and its connection to a sustainable lifestyle. The goal is to reuse old or unused ready-made garments, upholstery, curtains or leftovers to design new and experimental textile products. At the same time, students are trained in experimental and research work with an emphasis on fertile and creative thinking. Students become acquainted with various textile methods and technical aspects of machine sewing, as well as working with patterns in two- and three-dimensional form in a variety of ways. Emphasis is placed on recording the process of ideas and work in folders in parallel to practical practice. |
Fashion and product design (LVG501M, LVG106F)
Emphasis is placed on pattern construction and sewing techniques in connection with the design of clothing and textile products. Students use themes and research as sources of new ideas and innovation. Students work according to design methods that involve researching, experimenting and planning the processing of a product. Students complete projects in idea and design folders. Reports are made of the results of the course in context with pedagogical aspects and the value of fashion and textile design in further education and working life.
Sustainability in textiles (LVG501M, LVG106F)
Emphasis is on sustainability and environmental protection. The aim is to activate environmentally friendly thinking in action and to link sustainability in textiles to a sustainable and responsible lifestyle. Sustainable thinking, creativity and innovation are encouraged, to create something completely new or to renovate clothing and other textile products that already exist. The ideology of sustainable development and methodology and the process of design and innovation are followed; from the need and knowledge of subjects and technical methods to the development of ideas and experiments in search of solutions. The course provides tools, methods and solutions, but a new approach is created in each textile method each time new material is used. Reports are made of the results of the course in context with pedagogical aspects and the value of textiles in the society of education and teaching.
Music in terms of history (LVG104M, LVG103M, LVG109M)
The topic of this course is music in a historical perspective. Traditional Western musical history will not be the sole point of interest. The focus will rather be aimed at an eclectic view of music from various times and different parts of the world. Students will be encouraged to investigate how musical traditions and stiles are formed in the context of social and technological developments. By the end of the course students are expected to be capable of analysing a myriad of musical styles through the lenses of musical and socio-historical perspectives. Furthermore, students should acquire the ability to mediate this knowledge of musical styles and traditions to children and adolescents.
Practical accompaniment in music education (LVG104M, LVG103M, LVG109M)
During this course students will learn to apply efficient strategies for keyboard accompaniment in the context of music education. Practical theory of basic harmony will be taught for the purpose of laying a foundation for creating and improvising accompaniment for singing and ensembles. In addition to the keyboard the basic tenets of guitar and ukulele playing will be introduced using the same harmonic approach. Students will learn basic harmonic analysis of common music and will learn to create arrangements according to their own instrumental proficiency. By the end of the course students will have acquired skills to accompany common songs in at least six keys.
Practical accompaniment in music education II (LVG104M, LVG103M, LVG109M)
This course provides a further deepening of all the skills taught in the previous course on accompaniment on keyboard, guitar and ukulele.

Working with clay through art process (LVG101M, LVG003M)
The objective is for students to gain knowledge in developing their ideas on different visual modes with different techniques, methods and materials.
In the first part of the course various basic work will be covered such as sketch making and shaping forms in clay. Also, students learn all the basic work with glazes and firings.
In the second part of the course students choose their thesis in clay as they do a research and work quite independently.
Students should be active in registering their work process and taking photos. All documentation should be presented in a portfolio of the course.

Drama and theatre laboratory in the digital world (LVG205M, LVG108M)
The course is a mixture of academic and practical creative projects. The essence of the course is training students to work independently, professionally and creatively with drama. In addition, students are trained in the use of equipment and technology in doing short films and cinema, radio theater and social media for the future of the subject. Emphasis is placed on students acquiring understanding and knowledge of the work of drama teachers both theoretically and professionally. The latest research are introduced and projects prepared in connection with the research.
Dramafusion –communication in drama (LVG205M, LVG108M)
Assignments: Traning in devised methods of acting, as well as training in Physical Theater and Imagery. Theatre. Students will become acquaint with artists and art events in Icelandic society, linking to ideology and theory of artistic experience. Area of contact of drama will be explored from a variety of perspectives with different communication in drama
Work will mainly through workshops where students seek a variety ways to work with drama (traditional, unconventional), through different communication like, still images, film, sound, text, staging, and social media. Conditions and influence of drama in the present will be explored.
The projects aim for creativity and expression, related to the development of students learning trajectories, curriculum drama and reflect on drama in cultural and social dimension.
Woodcraft, woodturning and Wood Carving (LVG203M, LVG006M)
Students gain knowledge and skill in designing and making wooden objects they subsequently can decorate with wood carving. The focus is on making wooden things that can be used in daily life, wooden toys, and make objects in a wood turning lathe. Students learn to use common wood working tools and carving tools. In addition they will be taught about various techniques in terms of wood work as wood finishing, mountings, sharpening, gluing about wood science and joints.
Methods for teaching: The basis of the course is practical training but it also includes lectures and the teacher’s individual guidance during students craft work.
Assessment: Is based on evaluating students craft work and portfolios.
The aims are to:

Outdoor Education and Green Design (LVG203M, LVG006M)
Aim: To practice green sustainable craft.
General Description: The course is available for all English-speaking students. The course is without any preliminaries. Maximum number of participants is 12 students. Teaching outside through sustainable design is a new direction in Craft and Design Education. The course focuses on using Icelandic woods and ecological design. Students learn about the ecosystem of the Icelandic woods and how they can design artefacts for daily use from wet wood. They learn to use traditional whittling methods, which can be used securely in school education.
Working Methods: Craft activities and lectures.
Children's plays, for children and with children (LVG207M, LVG204F)
The course emphasizes introducing and training students to work independently and professionally in staging a play / musical in schools. A play will be prepared that addresses the issue of children and adolescents with children on the one hand and for children on the other. The basis of the course is the training of students to work independently, professionally and creatively with the installation of a stage play; preparation of script discussions, editing and presentations.
The value of drama in context of welfare and equality (LVG207M, LVG204F)
During the course, emphasis is placed on introducing both practical and theoretical subjects in drama. Theories and definitions are explored simultaneously with practical creative projects. Students get to know the conceptual history of drama in broad terms and the value of drama will be discussed with reference to theories and research.
Work will be based on the equality and welfare of children. Students acquire knowledge and understanding of equality and children's well-being and seek possibilities through drama that can be used in teaching.
In the course students will work independently, professionally and creatively with drama.

Education for sustainability – skills in a changing world (FAG201F)
The purpose of this course is to work with conceptual issues in sustainability and global initiative such as those being implemented by the UNESCO. Examples of problems in the environment and nature will be explored, f.ex. climate change, decrease in number of species, soil erosion and pollution. Emphasis will be on the role of teachers in dealing with controversial issues and how they can teach children to analyse problems, evaluate information and put forward possible solutions. Participants read and use research about sustainability education. Participants will also examine their own angle to sustainability, their values and behaviour.
It is obligatory to attend classes during On Campus weeks, according to the academic calendar for School of Education.

Literacy and subject teaching (ÍET214F)
The central objective of this course is for students to develop their ideas about literacy and how to intergrade literacy across subjects so that they will be better equipped to teach their own subject.
During their studies student develop their own personal theory, i.e. research and mould their ideas about how they will or want to perform as teachers.
An emphasis will be placed on a coherent and creative approach towards planning and organising teaching across subjects and that students will be introduce to research and novelties in teaching methods that enhance literacy and subject-based vocabulary in all school levels.
Icelandic and the education of multilingual students (ÍET206F)
In this course the focus is on Icelandic as a second language and the education of multilingual students in Icelandic compulsory schools. Language acquisition and language upbringing will be examined and the difference between acquiring skills in a first and a second language. The emphases will be on what it is that teachers in general need to know about the Icelandic language to be able to help their students make progress in the subject being taught.
The structure of the Icelandic language system, pronunciation, word formation, inflections, sentence structure, meaning of words and phrases, the three layers of the vocabulary, and various things related to language use will be studied. The purpose is to figure out what is most likely to be demanding for multilingual students in preschools who are acquiring the language, both in general but also due to personal differences, such as different first languages.
Based on this special attention will be paid to the teaching of different subjects and how they can be planned, taking in account students’ different level of Icelandic. Important aspect of that is how subject texts can be simplified to fit the needs of multilingual students.
Old Craft Traditions in Education (LVG004M)
The course is available for all English-speaking students. The course is without any preliminaries. Maximum number of participants is 12 students. The main goal is to help student develop their skill and knowledge in using Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing. Students get the 3D software Prodesktop for free. The course also deals with the Icelandic pedagogical model for Innovation Education. Students learn to set up applications for design protections and how they can set up courses for the elementary school using the above knowledge. Teaching methods are mainly lectures and workshops in the computer classroom, discussions and homework.
Outdoor Education and Green Design (LVG006M)
Aim: To practice green sustainable craft.
General Description: The course is available for all English-speaking students. The course is without any preliminaries. Maximum number of participants is 12 students. Teaching outside through sustainable design is a new direction in Craft and Design Education. The course focuses on using Icelandic woods and ecological design. Students learn about the ecosystem of the Icelandic woods and how they can design artefacts for daily use from wet wood. They learn to use traditional whittling methods, which can be used securely in school education.
Working Methods: Craft activities and lectures.
Woodcraft, woodturning and Wood Carving (LVG203M)
Students gain knowledge and skill in designing and making wooden objects they subsequently can decorate with wood carving. The focus is on making wooden things that can be used in daily life, wooden toys, and make objects in a wood turning lathe. Students learn to use common wood working tools and carving tools. In addition they will be taught about various techniques in terms of wood work as wood finishing, mountings, sharpening, gluing about wood science and joints.
Methods for teaching: The basis of the course is practical training but it also includes lectures and the teacher’s individual guidance during students craft work.
Assessment: Is based on evaluating students craft work and portfolios.
The aims are to:
- Train student in design,
- Increase students’ handicraft knowledge and skill,
- Train students in general woodwork, wood turning and wood carving.
Working with clay through art process (LVG003M)
The objective is for students to gain knowledge in developing their ideas on different visual modes with different techniques, methods and materials.
In the first part of the course various basic work will be covered such as sketch making and shaping forms in clay. Also, students learn all the basic work with glazes and firings.
In the second part of the course students choose their thesis in clay as they do a research and work quite independently.
Students should be active in registering their work process and taking photos. All documentation should be presented in a portfolio of the course.

The course is a mixture of academic and practical creative projects. The essence of the course is training students to work independently, professionally and creatively with drama. In addition, students are trained in the use of equipment and technology in doing short films and cinema, radio theater and social media for the future of the subject. Emphasis is placed on students acquiring understanding and knowledge of the work of drama teachers both theoretically and professionally. The latest research are introduced and projects prepared in connection with the research.
Dramafusion –communication in drama (LVG108M)
Assignments: Traning in devised methods of acting, as well as training in Physical Theater and Imagery. Theatre. Students will become acquaint with artists and art events in Icelandic society, linking to ideology and theory of artistic experience. Area of contact of drama will be explored from a variety of perspectives with different communication in drama
Work will mainly through workshops where students seek a variety ways to work with drama (traditional, unconventional), through different communication like, still images, film, sound, text, staging, and social media. Conditions and influence of drama in the present will be explored.
The projects aim for creativity and expression, related to the development of students learning trajectories, curriculum drama and reflect on drama in cultural and social dimension.
The value of drama in context of welfare and equality (LVG204F)
During the course, emphasis is placed on introducing both practical and theoretical subjects in drama. Theories and definitions are explored simultaneously with practical creative projects. Students get to know the conceptual history of drama in broad terms and the value of drama will be discussed with reference to theories and research.
Work will be based on the equality and welfare of children. Students acquire knowledge and understanding of equality and children's well-being and seek possibilities through drama that can be used in teaching.

Children's plays, for children and with children (LVG207M)
The course emphasizes introducing and training students to work independently and professionally in staging a play / musical in schools. A play will be prepared that addresses the issue of children and adolescents with children on the one hand and for children on the other. The basis of the course is the training of students to work independently, professionally and creatively with the installation of a stage play; preparation of script discussions, editing and presentations.
Textile art and design in a historical context (LVG108F)
Emphasis is placed on historical examination of older and new trends and currents in textile art works, fashion and design in the context of Icelandic textiles and clothing history as a source of new ideas. Emphasis is placed on originality and creative work methods in one's own intellectual works. The work process is based on conceptual work, source collection and processing as well as research and experimental work. Students work with design and decoration possibilities in two- and three-dimensional forming based on the theoretical basis of textiles. Students work professionally on the presentation of their work, which is followed by exhibition. Reports are made with pedagogical aspects and teaching assignments with an emphasis on the historical connection of textiles: fashion, design and art.

The goal is to reuse old or unused ready-made garments, upholstery, curtains or leftovers to design new and experimental textile products. Students become acquainted with various textile methods and technical aspects of machine sewing, as well as working with patterns in two- and three-dimensional form in a variety of ways. The topic of this course is music learning theories and practical implications. The readings include principles and processes in recent music education theories. Critical theories in music education will be examined and used to explore traditions and conventions in music instruction for children, youth and adults. Students will explore some wide spread methods of music teaching and learning.
Practical accompaniment in music education (LVG103M)
During this course students will learn to apply efficient strategies for keyboard accompaniment in the context of music education. Practical theory of basic harmony will be taught for the purpose of laying a foundation for creating and improvising accompaniment for singing and ensembles. In addition to the keyboard the basic tenets of guitar and ukulele playing will be introduced using the same harmonic approach. Students will learn basic harmonic analysis of common music and will learn to create arrangements according to their own instrumental proficiency. By the end of the course students will have acquired skills to accompany common songs in at least six keys.
Music and the brain (LVG102M)
The subject of this course is the effect of music on humans from various perspectives. The course will provide insights into research on the effect of music on emotions and well-being. Music perception research will be discussed as well as theories on music and learning. Reading material will include recent research within brain research and neuro-psychology.
Students take an active part in shaping the outline and focus of each weeks lecture by providing their own opinions and interests on the readings of each week. Students are encouraged to form opinions on issues that interest them the most in the readings and the teacher provides additional readings to deepen the knowledge in accordance with the students' diverse areas of interest.
Music in terms of history (LVG104M)
The topic of this course is music in a historical perspective. Traditional Western musical history will not be the sole point of interest. The focus will rather be aimed at an eclectic view of music from various times and different parts of the world. Students will be encouraged to investigate how musical traditions and stiles are formed in the context of social and technological developments. By the end of the course students are expected to be capable of analysing a myriad of musical styles through the lenses of musical and socio-historical perspectives. Furthermore, students should acquire the ability to mediate this knowledge of musical styles and traditions to children and adolescents.

Sustainable thinking, creativity and innovation are encouraged, to create something completely new or to renovate clothing and other textile products that already exist. The ideology of sustainable development and methodology and the process of design and innovation are followed; from the need and knowledge of subjects and technical methods to the development of ideas and experiments in search of solutions. The course provides tools, methods and solutions, but a new approach is created in each textile method each time new material is used. Subject Singing and vocal training for children and youth in choirs. Focus on individual development of each student in mastering choral conducting techniques that are appropriate for young choral voices.

Students will learn basic harmonic analysis of common music and will learn to create arrangements according to their own instrumental proficiency. Students deal with independent research projects according to an agreement. Research work will be done through practicing the topics in question; the research shall be done in a certificated research method within creative arts , crafts and vocation training with emphasis on fertile and creative thinking and well thought working methods. The student enters an agreement about the dwelling deeper into the discipline, which is taught in kindergarten, primary schools and secondary school. The main factors of the research work are data gathering along with experimental and developmental work. Emphasis is placed on the presentation of the assignment and that students can argue their conclusions and finished assignment.
A seminar is part of the course, which present students the chance to gain experience in introducing the progress or results of the project in front of teachers and fellow students. The goal of the seminar is to help students in the their discipline’s discourse and in academic discourse so that they gain a deeper understanding the subject. The seminar will be advertised and open to all.

Language acquisition and language upbringing will be examined and the difference between acquiring skills in a first and a second language. The emphases will be on what it is that teachers in general need to know about the Icelandic language to be able to help their students make progress in the subject being taught.
The structure of the Icelandic language system, pronunciation, word formation, inflections, sentence structure, meaning of words and phrases, the three layers of the vocabulary, and various things related to language use will be studied. The purpose is to figure out what is most likely to be demanding for multilingual students in preschools who are acquiring the language, both in general but also due to personal differences, such as different first languages.
Based on this special attention will be paid to the teaching of different subjects and how they can be planned, taking in account students’ different level of Icelandic. Important aspect of that is how subject texts can be simplified to fit the needs of multilingual students.

Selected sociological and philosophical ideas that are useful to study education and the school reality will be discussed. There is emphasis on three things. A. To think critically about the ideas and the reality that they are meant to throw light on.

Language acquisition and language upbringing will be examined and the difference between acquiring skills in a first and a second language. The emphases will be on what it is that teachers in general need to know about the Icelandic language to be able to help their students make progress in the subject being taught.
The structure of the Icelandic language system, pronunciation, word formation, inflections, sentence structure, meaning of words and phrases, the three layers of the vocabulary, and various things related to language use will be studied. The purpose is to figure out what is most likely to be demanding for multilingual students in preschools who are acquiring the language, both in general but also due to personal differences, such as different first languages.
Based on this special attention will be paid to the teaching of different subjects and how they can be planned, taking in account students’ different level of Icelandic. Important aspect of that is how subject texts can be simplified to fit the needs of multilingual students.

The course also deals with the Icelandic pedagogical model for Innovation Education. Students learn to set up applications for design protections and how they can set up courses for the elementary school using the above knowledge. Teaching methods are mainly lectures and workshops in the computer classroom, discussions and homework.

Teaching outside through sustainable design is a new direction in Craft and Design Education. The course focuses on using Icelandic woods and ecological design. Students learn about the ecosystem of the Icelandic woods and how they can design artefacts for daily use from wet wood. They learn to use traditional whittling methods, which can be used securely in school education.

The focus is on making wooden things that can be used in daily life, wooden toys, and make objects in a wood turning lathe. Students learn to use common wood working tools and carving tools. In addition they will be taught about various techniques in terms of wood work as wood finishing, mountings, sharpening, gluing about wood science and joints.
Methods for teaching: The basis of the course is practical training but it also includes lectures and the teacher’s individual guidance during students craft work.
Assessment: Is based on evaluating students craft work and portfolios.
The aims are to:

- Train students in general woodwork, wood turning and wood carving.

In the first part of the course various basic work will be covered such as sketch making and shaping forms in clay. Also, students learn all the basic work with glazes and firings.
In the second part of the course students choose their thesis in clay as they do a research and work quite independently.
