Equality Days at the University of Iceland are currently being held for the 9th time. The programme runs from Monday, 9 October until Friday, 20 October. As usual, all events are free of charge and open to all. This is also the third year that every university in Iceland participates.
Equality days combine various aspects of equality and feminism and focus on diversity, privilege, silencing, the struggle for equality, power and discrimination. The emphasis is on the opportunities created by placing the ideas of the normative – what is "normal" – and the subordinated under the microscope. Equality is a guiding principle of the University of Iceland and the basis of diversity and respect in the academic community.
The programme is varied and based on inter-disciplinary collaborations where attempts are made to combine festivity and a critical view on the current state of equality issues. Queer equality is one of the dimensions tackled this year and a part of that is the exhibition "Why do we need gender-neutral toilets?" Events in English include body shaming; "What's size got to do with it? Bodies, Fatness, and Fairness" and "Welcome or not? Two individuals share their experiences of moving to Iceland."
Equality days are a forum for open discussion, a better understanding of equality and to increase the visibility of this important issue, utilizing the strength of the broad range of people operating in the field of equality. The aim of Equality Days is to promote discussions and understanding of issues of equality.
All Icelandic universities participate in Equality Days.
