Various Opportunities for Ph.D. Students

Doctoral students have access to various opportunities through Erasmus+, the European Union’s education programme. Students can apply for Erasmus+ grants for various activities within Erasmus+ programme countries

Erasmus+ offers opportunities for exchange studies, research, traineeships, short courses, conference participation, and traineeships after graduation.

Information on opportunities, requirements and grant amounts can be found below.

  • When participating in exchange studies students take courses that award ECTS credits at one of UI’s partner universities. The credits are then recognised towards their UI degree.
  • It is only possible to apply for exchange studies at higher education institutions where UI already has an inter-institution agreement for doctoral students.
  • Students should be enrolled in full time studies at the host institution, 30 ECTS per semester, and it is possible to go abroad for one or two semesters.

  • Doctoral students can apply for a grant to do research related to their final project at universities, companies or organisations.
  • It is not necessary to have an inter-institutional agreement between UI and the receiving institution, but if the receiving institution is a higher education institution it must have an Erasmus Charter
  • Research work can be long-term (2-12 months) or short-term (5-30 days).

  • Doctoral students can undertake a traditional traineeship at companies, organisations or universities where they can gain valuable experience for the labour market after graduation.
  • Traineeships can be long-term (2-12 months) or short-term (5-30 days)

  • Doctoral students can apply for short study programmes at UI partner institutions. It is only possible to apply for an Erasmus+ grant for studies at institutions where UI already has an inter-institutional agreement.
  • Short study programmes must be 5-30 days of on-campus/in-person studies.
  • Students can also apply for blended/hybrid programmes, that have both a physical and virtual component.
  • If the programme is a blended intensive programme (BIP) students must participate in both the physical and virtual components.
  • If the programme is a blended intensive programme organised with Erasmus+ funding doctoral students must complete both the physical and virtual components.

  • Doctoral students can apply for Erasmus+ grants to participate in conferences.
  • When applying for grants for conferences the student must be an active participant with a talk or a poster and the host organisation must be ready to receive the student, sign the learning agreement for traineeships, and support the mobility of the student as described in the learning agreement for traineeships which is signed by the student, UI and the receiving organisation.
  • The duration of the mobility must be at least 5 days.

  • Doctoral students can bridge the gap between their studies and the labour market and apply for Erasmus+ traineeships at universities, companies or organisations after graduation.
  • Students must apply for the traineeship at least two months before the graduation.
  • Students can get an Erasmus+ grant for 6 months maximum and must start and complete their traineeship within 6 months from graduation.
  • The traineeship can be long-term (2-12 months) or short-term (5-30 days)

Doctoral students can get an Erasmus+ grant for a total of 12 months (360 days). It is possible to get a grant more than once during the studies. Doctoral students can only receive one grant for a short-term mobility (5-30 days) per semester. They can receive a total of five short-term mobility grants during their studies.

Grant amounts
The grant amounts depend on the destination country and the duration of the mobility. Amounts can differ between academic years.

  • The travel support grant is 309-1188 EUR
  • The individual support grant for short-term mobility (5-30 days) is 79 EUR per day for the first 14 days, then 56 EUR per day
  • The individual support grant for long-term mobility (2-12 months) is 550-606 EUR per month for exchange studies and 700-756 EUR for traineeships

Erasmus+ grants for students with fewer opportunities
Students can also apply for Erasmus+ grants for students with fewer opportunities. If students meet the criteria defined by the Icelandic Erasmus+ National Agency they can for apply for a top-up, which is 250 EUR per month or 100/150 EUR per short-term mobility.

If the travel grant only covers 70% of actual travel costs or less, even though the most economical way of travelling was chosen, students may apply for additional support for expensive travel. If approved, the increased travel grant will cover up to a maximum of 80% of actual travel costs.

If the participant demonstrates that the main mode of travel has been environmentally friendly (based on the number of kilometers), the travel grant is higher, ranging from 417-1735 EUR.
