Transfer technology from research results

The Division of Science and Innovation (DSI) handles protection of intellectual property, licence agreements and technology transfer for employees at the University of Iceland and Landspítali University Hospital. DSI leads collaborative efforts in technology transfer at all universities in Iceland and major public research institutes.

DSI incentivises innovation at the University of Iceland through education, events, consulting and by encouraging collaboration between academia and industry.

General information

The University of Iceland places great importance on the societal impact of research and academic activities at the University.

The role of the Intellectual Property (IP) Committee is to encourage staff and doctoral students to transfer technology from research results.

According to the Icelandic Act Respecting Employees’ Inventions, No. 72/2004, employees are required to notify their employer about inventions that could be patentable.

All employees and doctoral students at the University of Iceland and Landspítali University Hospital can contact the Intellectual Property Committee if they have an idea with commercial potential.

The University of Iceland and Landspítali, the same as other employers, are entitled to acquire the rights to inventions that employees have discovered in the course of their work.

Auðna is the name of the technology transfer office that serves all universities in Iceland, the UI Science Park and major public research institutions, the Ministry of Industries and Innovation and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

The purpose of Auðna is to serve the entire publicly funded scientific community in Iceland and help deliver scientific results with commercial potential to capable entrepreneurs, investors and industry.

The aim of the awards is to strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship within the University by rewarding the best ideas and research findings that could benefit Icelandic society. Both staff and students are eligible for the awards.
