Abstract

I am a professor of sociology at the School of Social Sciences. I received my BA degree in sociology from the University of Iceland and my MA and PhD from the University of Missouri. My main research interests include criminology, penal policies and the problem of drugs and alcohol in society. My articles and book chapters have appeared in numerous journals and books in Europe, United States and S-America. I have authored and co-authored several books, including Wayward Icelanders: Punishment, Boundary Maintenance and the Creation of Crime. Over the years, I have participated in many Nordic and European research projects. Among others, on the public sense of justice in the Nordic nations; criminal victimization in Europe and Nordic drug legislations. Moreover, I have collaborated with researchers from S-America, Canada, France and Russia on arctic and antarctic sociocultural issues.
