A large audience gathered in Veröld, House of Vigdís, on Friday, 25 September to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Gender Studies at the University of Iceland. During the event, speakers reflected on the evolution of the field since its introduction at the University in 1996 and highlighted its contributions to research, teaching and public debate.
The celebration will begin with opening remarks by Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir, Rector of the University of Iceland, followed by talks from scholars and experts on the role and impact of Gender Studies in both academia and society. The event concluded with a farewell toast in honour of during which Þorgerður Jennýjardóttir Einarsdóttir, Professor Emerita of Gender Studies, bid farewell to both the discipline and her colleagues. She has been one of the driving forces behind the development of the discipline at the University and is now retiring after a distinguished career devoted to teaching, research and academic leadership. The programme also featured artistic performances reflecting the diversity and social relevance that have characterised Gender Studies from the outset.
