Over 200 schoolchildren aged 12–14 will take part in the annual University of Youth, held at the University of Iceland. This year, it takes place mostly at the School of Education’s new facilities at Saga. The University of Youth will run from June 10-12, during which scientists and students at the University of Iceland will introduce participants to the wonders of science and life in a dynamic and engaging way.

The University of Youth starts at 13.00 on Wednesday, June 10, with a school opening ceremony in Saga. Afterwards, students will take part in a theme-based programme where they’ll learn about various science subjects. Students can, for example, choose between a physics theme where they’ll visit an astrophysics laboratory where an astronomical telescope is being designed and developed; the social sciences game where students learn about what it’s like being an adult; the magic of archaeology where in a fun visit to the National Museum of Iceland; an artificial intelligence theme with a visit to the video game developer CCP; a scavenger hunt with experts from sports and health sciences; and an introduction to foreign cultures by participating in a language marathon.

On Thursday and Friday, students will attend diverse short courses according to a timetable they’ve chosen themselves. Among subjects are criminology, the physics behind water rockets, counselling and the power of the mind, how to build a catapult, Icelandic sign language, Chinese studies, law, artificial intelligence, pharmacology, physical therapy, surgery, wood whittling, and drama.

The University of Youth emphasises dynamic, engaging teaching and subjects, and, between lessons, students can enjoy outdoor games and board games. The University of Youth concludes on Friday, June 12, with a barbecue and a final ceremony outside Saga, featuring bouncy castles and activities for students.
