Opportunities in innovation for students, company site visits, assistance with CV writing, career opportunities for new PhDs, conversations with experienced professionals from diverse industries, and informal chats with representatives from recruitment agencies and employment services are among the events offered during Career Days at the University of Iceland, taking place February 16–20.
Career Days is an annual event held in February at the University of Iceland. The event is organised by the University of Iceland Student Counselling and Career Centre, the University of Iceland Career Centre (Tengslatorg), the Financial and Career Committee of the University of Iceland Student Council, the Centre for Graduate Studies (Miðstöð framhaldsnáms), the University of Iceland Science Park, and KLAK – Icelandic Startups. The aim of the event is to highlight students’ career development during their university studies while also preparing them for participation in the labour market. Many students are undoubtedly looking for exciting job opportunities these days.
Faculty members are also encouraged to take part in the Career Days programme by emphasising in their teaching how the skills students acquire in their studies can be applied in working life.
The Career Days programme begins with an opening event in Mýrin, the entrepreneurial community space in Gróska at the Science Park, on Monday, February 16, from 16:00 to 18:00. The title of the event is Students and Innovation – Bridging the Gap, and it is divided into two parts. The first part takes place in Mýrin at Gróska, where Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir, rector of the University of Iceland, will open Career Days. Representatives from the Science Park, KLAK – Icelandic Startups, and the Student Council’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Committee will present innovation opportunities, and two University of Iceland students will share their experiences with innovation and entrepreneurship. A panel discussion will also be held with participants from within and outside the University of Iceland. The second part of the event takes place in the main corridor of Gróska, where startup companies will present their activities to students, providing an excellent opportunity for networking and potentially job searching.
On Tuesday, February 17, the Financial and Career Committee of the Student Council will host a lunchtime event at Litla torg, where Björn Berg, an independent lecturer and personal finance advisor, will discuss how individuals can improve their financial well-being.
New this year is the event Take a Seat! which will be held at Háskólatorg at lunchtime on Wednesday, February 18. Students will have the opportunity to sit down with alumni and University Friends over coffee and kleina to discuss their experiences in the job market and receive useful advice on building a career. On the same day, a site visit to ON Power (Orka náttúrunnar) will be offered to students from 15:00 to 16:00 at Bæjarháls 1. Registration is required.
On Thursday, February 19, representatives from numerous recruitment agencies and employment services will be present at Háskólatorg between 11:45 and 13:00 to chat with students about job opportunities and ways to present themselves effectively in the labour market. Once again, this will be an opportunity to expand professional networks. That same day, Alvotech, located at Sæmundargata 15, will welcome students for a visit from 16:00 to 18:00. Further registration details can be found in the Career Days programme.
During the week, the University of Iceland Student Counselling and Career Centre will also offer workshops in Icelandic and English on preparing a strong job application, including writing a good CV and cover letter. In addition, the Centre for Graduate Studies will host three events focusing on the key elements of an academic career and employment opportunities for individuals with doctoral degrees. Experienced professionals from both within and outside the university will participate in these events.
