The University of Iceland has set a new and ambitious policy on AI, passed by the University Council on 4 December 2025. The goal of the policy is clear: The University intends to spearhead the responsible and innovative implementation of this technology in the Icelandic academic community.

A dynamic policy for a new era

The AI policy covers all facets of university operations, from teaching and studying to research and administration. As the technology is evolving fast the policy is seen as a living document subject to regular review.

There are three foundations to the policy

  • increasing the skill and knowledge of student and staff for responsible, critical and creative uses of AI
  • enhancing efficiency and innovation in administration, teaching and scientific work
  • to ensure equality and accessibility to all tools and support offered by the University

The policy also presents guidelines to ensure successful implementation. These concern academic integrity for both staff and students, coordinated instructions on the use of AI, data security, human rights and privacy issues, professional responsibility and extensive cooperation between the University‘s core divisions.

What happens next?

Work on implementation is already underway led by specialists. Among the first projects is to write instructions for teachers, and to find ways to ensure access to first class AI software and provide essential training. Furthermore, clear guidelines on academic integrity and data-security will be put in place, and development of chatbots for the University community will be sped up.
