The University of Iceland is taking its first step towards improving traffic and the environment on campus by introducing parking fees for those using the university's parking. This change will take effect on 18 August 2025. During the first week, staff and students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new parking arrangements at the university and register for a subscription without the risk of receiving a fine.

The parking zones will be divided into two categories:

  • H1: Short-term parking spaces. These are specially marked spaces located closest to the main university buildings. They are subject to a parking fee for all users, in accordance with the published tariff and are not included in long-term parking with a monthly subscription.
  • H2: Long-term parking spaces. Staff and students at the University of Iceland may subscribe to use these spaces as long-term parking with a monthly subscription. Other users must pay the hourly rate as specified in the tariff.

Holders of a disabled parking permit may continue to park in paid spaces without charge, in accordance with current traffic laws.

Parking tariff

Parking spaces at the University of Iceland are intended for students, staff, and guests. The spaces are either available by subscription for staff and students or open to everyone for an hourly fee.

H1 and H2: Hourly rate

  • The fee applies: Weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm
  • Applies to both H1 and H2 areas
  • Price: ISK 230/hour
  • If no payment is made, the vehicle owner will receive a charge in their online bank based on the hourly rate plus a service fee of ISK 2,500

H2: Subscription

  • Students and staff at the University of Iceland can subscribe to long-term parking at H2 for a monthly fee through the Parka app
  • The fee is ISK 1,500 per month
  • Each individual can register two vehicles, but only one can be parked at a time under the monthly subscription terms. If both are parked simultaneously, an hourly rate will apply to the one that arrives later.
  • The subscription is automatically renewed monthly from the date of registration.
  • Please note that a subscription does not guarantee an available parking space but grants the right to park in designated subscription areas (H2) when spaces are available.

Parka lausnir ehf will manage the operation and collection of fees for the car parks.

Further information about parking fees and instructions for subscribing via the Parka app can be found on the University of Iceland’s parking information page.

UI as a Leading Institution in Sustainability and Environmental Issues

The University of Iceland’s strategy emphasises its role as a leading institution in sustainability and environmental issues. As one of the largest workplaces in the country, UI is well-positioned to positively influence society in this area. A key part of the university’s sustainability strategy is the introduction of paid parking, which will take effect on 18 August, as previously mentioned. This change aims to improve traffic flow and the campus environment, with parking fees set at a moderate level.

Improved transport agreements for UI staff

Alongside these changes, UI has also negotiated special staff rates with Strætó. This results in changes to the arrangement of transport agreements for employees who have signed an employment contract with the University of Iceland and hold at least a 20% employment position.
