The Strategy of UI emphasises that UI should lead the way in environmental and sustainability issues. UI is one of the largest employers in Iceland and, therefore, in a strong position to have a positive impact on our society. As part of the University's sustainability policy, we will be introducing a vehicle registration system and parking charges at UI. The new system will be implemented on 18 August. The change is intended to reduce car traffic and create a greener campus.

A link to register for a parking permit will be announced shortly.

  • Moderate parking charges will be introduced on 18 August, the start of the autumn semester.
  • There will be charges for parking between 8 am and 4 pm on working days.
  • A monthly parking permit will cost ISK 1,500.
  • Otherwise, parking will cost ISK 230 per hour in all UI parking spaces.

Parking spaces will be divided into two categories:

Selected parking spaces closest to UI buildings will have hourly charges for everyone. These will be specially marked as short-term parking spaces.

  • All other parking spaces will have hourly charges for short-term parking, but UI students and staff can also use them for long-term parking if they buy a monthly permit at a reasonable rate.
  • People with a disabled parking permit can park in any space free of charge.
  • Parking will be ISK 230 per hour in all UI parking spaces, equivalent to zone P4 with the Reykjavík Parking Service.

Students and staff can buy a monthly permit for ISK 1,500, allowing them to use any long-term parking space without additional charges. Each individual can register two cars, but only one can be parked at a time using the monthly permit. If both cars are parked at the same time, the second will incur hourly charges.

Students and staff at Læknagarður will be able to use the same monthly permits to park at Landspítali University Hospital.

UI will consult closely with Landspítali University Hospital and other nearby institutions to determine the exact arrangements. Care will be taken to ensure that students and staff in the health sciences, who need to visit both the main UI campus and Landspítali University Hospital, are not double-charged.

Parka will manage services related to parking spaces and charges.

Improved transport agreements for UI staff from 5 August

Alongside these changes, UI has also negotiated special staff rates with Strætó. This results in changes to the arrangement of transport agreements for employees who have signed an employment contract with the University of Iceland and hold at least a 20% employment position.

Employees who sign a transport agreement will commit to travelling to and from the University using sustainable transport at least twice a week (at least 40% of journeys). A transport agreement lasts for one year.

Employees can choose two different options:

  • A grant towards an annual Strætó bus pass. The employee pays ISK 36,000 to Strætó for the bus pass. This also includes free access to the UI Gym on Sæmundargata.
  • Free access to the UI Gym on Sæmundargata, e.g. for employees who cycle to the University.

As before, Strætó offers a 50% student discount.

These measures are designed to encourage people to choose sustainable transport options when travelling to and from the University and will help promote better use of UI parking spaces and a greener campus.

Alongside the introduction of parking charges, the University is also working systematically to make it easier to choose sustainable transport, e.g. by building bike shelters and other facilities for cyclists. Sustainable transport refers to all transport other than private cars, as defined by Icelandic traffic laws.
