
Logi Einarsson, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, has appointed Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir, Professor in the Faculty of Political Science, as Rector of the University of Iceland for the next five years. He presented Silja Bára with her letter of appointment on Friday, 16 May.
As is known, Silja Bára won the rector election held among staff and students of the University of Iceland in March. The University Council then approved her nomination for the position of Rector at its meeting on 3 April, for the term from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2030. She will succeed Jón Atli Benediktsson, who has served as Rector since 2015.
Silja Bára is a Professor of international relations in the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Iceland's School of Social Sciences. She holds a PhD in Political Science from University College Cork in Ireland, a Master’s degree in international relations from the University of Southern California, and a BA in the same field from Lewis & Clark College in the United States. Silja Bára has worked at the University of Iceland for around two decades and has conducted research in the fields of foreign and security policy, gender and reproductive rights, and feminist international relations.
