Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir

Professor Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir, at the Faculty of Political Scicence, has been elected Rector at the University of Iceland. The election results were announced in the Main Building’s Ceremonial Hall late this afternoon. She received 50,7% of the votes in the election and will be nominated by the University Council to the Minister of Culture, Innovation, and Higher Education for the position of Rector.


The electronic voting for the second round of the rectorial election was open from 9 am on Wednesday 26 March to 5 pm on Thursday 27 March 2025. The candidates were Professors Magnús Karl Magnússon and Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir.

Electoral register and voter turnout


The same electoral register was used for the second round of the rector election as in the first. 14,557 individuals were on the electoral register: 1,752 members of staff and 12,805 students. A total of 1.543 staff members or 88.1% of the electoral register and 5.335 students or 41.7% of the electoral register voted. Altogether, 6.878 votes were cast. The overall voter turnout was thus 47.3%. Blank ballots accounted for 1.7% of the total votes cast.

The votes of University staff are given a weight of 70%. Student votes are given a weight of 30%. Taking into consideration the weighting of different groups of voters, the votes were divided amongst the candidates as detailed below:

Since Silja Bára received 50.7 percent of the votes, she will be nominated for the position of rector. The University Council will nominate Silja Bára to the Minister of Culture, Innovation, and Higher Education, and this will be included on the next council meeting agenda, scheduled for Thursday, 3 April. The Minister of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education will then appoint Silja Bára to the office of rector for a five-year term from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2030.
