Etude

The company Etude has started testing its first game and is now looking for testers with experience in playing a musical instrument. The game, also named Etude, is a role-playing game for 2-8 players. Players compete against each other and at the same time, work together to create music.

Every note is a vote, allowing players to shape their band's musical direction through Band Consensus, a specially designed algorithm determining which root notes and scales can be used based on the set of notes already in the consensus. If a player uses a disallowed note, they will lose points and the rest of the band will not hear it. The game is about collaboration and influencing the band's direction.

Players earn a ‘Symphonic Score, which is an Elo-based rating, similar to the scoring system used in chess, and that is used for player matchmaking. Players also lose points if the number of notes they play are not roughly in proportion to the number played by the rest of the band. One, three and five-minute matches are available, as well as a ‘Free Mode’, which allows players to play together without time limits. Players can also create private servers to play with friends or other groups.

You can sign up to test the game at etude.is.

Etude also has its own Discord server where you can chat with the developers and give feedback on the game.

Etude was developed by Eiður Á. Möller, musician and former UI computer science student, in collaboration with Jóhann Pétur Malmquist, professor emeritus of computer science at UI. Jóhann and Eiður met through a UI course, ‘From an idea to reality’, which Jóhann teaches, and later founded Etude together.
