The diploma programme in professional supervision teaches students to understand and apply a systematic, dynamic approach to communications between individuals, professional groups and institutional partners. Students develop and learn to demonstrate the skills required to be able to plan and manage implementation of professional supervision systems.

The programme is designed for professionals with legally recognised qualifications, e.g. social workers, nurses, teachers, doctors, pastors/theologians, occupational therapists, psychologists and physiotherapists.

Programme structure

The programme is 30 ECTS and is organised as one and a half years of part-time study.

Mandatory courses:

  • Professional supervision - external framework and internal communications in the workplace, 10 ECTS
  • Professional supervision and skills, 10 ECTS
  • Contemporary professional supervision – new approaches, 10 ECTS

Organisation of teaching

The programme is made up of lectures, clinical training, independent study and assignments that support students’ learning and development. The programme includes regular group sessions every other week and students are required to complete 60 hours of training.

Other

It is possible to transfer credits from this programme to an MA in Social Work, on the condition that admission requirements are met.

Applicants must have finished the MA in Social Work with Professional Recognition or an equivalent university degree. In addition, admission requires at least 4 years of work experience within the area of social or health services, education or legal system. Furthermore, applicants are required to have completed 40 hours of supervision, including at least 25 hours of individual supervision.

30 ECTS credits have to be completed for the qualification. The programme is organised as part-time study for three semesters but the duration is flexible.

Course Description

he focus of the course is on a systematic approach, management and communication in welfare institutions (human services organization). The concepts,history, structure and different supervision models will be presented. Systems analysis is discussed and managerial communication between colleagues and supervisors. The emphasis is on how supervision can enhance job satisfaction, strengthen the professional and improve the quality of services.  The theoretical basis is on supervision and organizational theories, communication theories and psychodynamic approach. Parallell with lectures there is clinical teaching (group supervision) where students work with real supervision cases under the supervision of clinical supervisors.

The course deals with the philosophy, history and the beginning of the teaching and professional ethics, and highlights the liaison and personal and professional development, among other things, on the basis of psykodynamic and relations theories. Emphasis is on the separation of the guidance of species and forms, together with the different nature of the study - and professional supervision.

The course covers concepts, processes and phenomena, role positions, work methods and techniques. Special emphasis is placed on the initial connection, the characteristics of the steps in the guidance process, a parallel process and the elimination of obstacles. Ways to reflect, assess progress and eliminate connections (complete guidance) are also presented.
