The master´s level certificate in financial economics is designed for students who want an introduction to finance and economics but lack the technical or academic background to apply for a full Master’s programme in these subjects right away. It is particularly well suited for students who have a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics but want to explore finance and economics in a flexible way.
Like the MS in financial economics, the programme focuses on the relationship between financial theory and practical economics, but applicants are not required to meet the same standards in mathematics and statistics.
Programme structure
The programme is 60 ECTS and can be completed in one year of full-time study.
The programme is entirely made up of courses selected to suit the background and needs of the individual student.
Organisation of teaching
Applicants are not required to meet the same standards for technical knowledge as applicants for the MS in financial economics. This programme enables students to develop this knowledge through introductory courses. It is possible to take the graduate programme as preparation for the MS in financial economics; if students achieve a sufficiently high standard in the introductory courses they may transfer to the MS programme after the first semester.
This programme is taught in Icelandic but most textbooks are in English.
Main objectives
Students should acquire a thorough knowledge of economics and finance, equipping them for a range of careers requiring technical knowledge of financial markets and the economy.
Other
Students who complete the programme with a first-class grade may apply for the Master's programme.
