The MA in social work with professional recognition teaches students methods for working with different demographics in our society, including interview techniques and specific approaches to working with children and adolescents, groups and families.
Much of the programme is made up of professional training at institutions outside the University of Iceland under the guidance of specialised vocational teachers.
Programme structure
The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study.
The programme is made up of:
- Courses, 60 ECTS
- Professional training, 30 ECTS
- Final thesis, 30 ECTS.
Organisation of teaching
The programme is taught face to face and attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to attend from 8.20 am to 4 pm most working days.
This programme is taught in Icelandic but most textbooks are in English.
Main objectives
The programme provides students with the skills required for a career in social work. Students acquire theoretical knowledge and receive clinical training in the methods used by social workers. They take courses in interview techniques, working with children and adolescents, groups and families, and therapy.
Students are also trained in methodology and complete an MA thesis.
Other
After completing this programme, students may apply to the Directorate of Health for the legally protected title of social worker.
Completing the programme allows a student to apply for doctoral studies.
BA degree in Social Work from University of Iceland with first class grade (7,25).
120 ECTS credits must be completed for the qualification. The MA programme consists of theoretical courses, methods and statistics. Students complete their studies with MA thesis which carries the weight of 30 ECTS.

The Social Work Profession and ethics (FRG105F)
The goal of this course is to have students learn interview technique and receive opportunities to practice interviewing through role plays. Students make an interviewing video and analyse it. Students also do other projects, connecting professional knowledge with practice, creating awareness about own attitutes, values and personal factors. Professional writing is also adressed in this course, as a tool in case procedure. Also work related stress and burnout is addressed. Finally, supervision is introduced and the importance of it in social work.

The course (2 ECTS) is especially aimed at students who have completed at least three years of undergraduate studies in clinical disciplines within the field of health sciences. It is a prerequisite for the clinical course Interdisciplinary clinical cooperation: The HealthSquare (2 ECTS) (health care service for university students). The course is based on the theories of interprofessional education and various teaching strategies will be used in order to encourage active participation of students. Students will work together in interdisciplinary groups. The course is mainly focused on interdisciplinary theories, professionalism, interdisciplinary cooperation, team work and ethical decisions in health care.
Assessment (pass / fail) is based on project work, activity in project work and exams that take place in electronic form in the teaching cycle.
Teaching arrangements:
Students are divided into interdisciplinary study groups at the beginning of the semester that plan and execute their own meeting times and hand in their final assignments before the end of October.
Integration of Practice and Theories: Practical Training I (FRG106F)
The goal of the seminar is to connect academic and field work in social work. Course work in the field: Students will have an opportunity to observe professional social workers in the field and see how structures in which services are delivered relate to theories and research in the field. They will get the opportunity to complete simple tasks and develop self knowledge to be able to do social work.
Students will be doing field work during five weeks under the supervision of a field practice teacher. The students will turn in for theoretical seminars at the universtiy of Iceland where they will discuss examples from their field work experience. They will also analyze problems and situations from the field work through methods taught in social work. The seminars will be composed of lectures and cases.
Diagnosis of Psychietric Disorders (FRG108F)
This course discusses the development psychodynamic theories in relation to the diagnosis of psychological disorders. Definitions and classifications according to standard psychiatric diagnostic systems are examined along with mainstream therapeutic methods. Special emphasis is placed on utilising this knowledge in the field of Social Work.
Group Work and Group Therapy (FRG129F)
The aim of the course is that students will be able to manage and organize group work and group intervention, in addition to working as a team. Students should have acquainted themselves with proven methods in group work and group intervention and have the ability to participate in further training in this field. That students can identify different types of groups and can utilize the guidance of instructors to, among other things, develop professionally. That students have participated in a support group (group work) and, among other things, identify their weaknesses and strengths.
Children and Adolescents - case work (FRG210F)
The aim of the course is to give students the possibility to acquire the nessessary knowledge and ability to work with children from birth to 18 years of age. It is emphasied that the child should be in focus when it is the client of a public office which on the basis of laws and regulations has the role to take care of the interests of the child. These institutions can be ministries, schools, hospitals etc.
Family Theories and Therapy (FRG215F)
The aim of the course is that students gain knowledge about theoretical basis and use of family perspective in social work in various fields in therapy and service.
In this course, theoretical development in the area of family therapy is discussed along with how a family based approach has been central in social work. Emphasis is placed on the theory and concepts of the systemic approach as well as on the family life cycle. Various theoretical approaches are presented as well as an understanding of when it is appropriate to use different approaches. Transitions in life such as a divorce, stepfamilies, are discussed. Own ideas are explored regarding people who do not fall under the norm, such as LGBT people, disabled people and people of a different cultural background and how we need to be aware of those issues when we work with families. Students work on a project which help them relating theoretical knowledge to cases. They are trained in diagnosing a family system. The form of learning is through presentations, discussions, training and group work.
Crisis Theory and Intervention (FRG206F)
This course offers an introduction into crisis theory and crisis intervention at various levels. Emphasis will be put on introducing multidisciplinary research in this field and how social workers were important members of these research teams. Focus is on how social workers use various intervention techniques to influence crisis at different levels. Diagnostic and therapeutic methods are discussed along with the importance of education and prevention. Students are given an opportunity to look at their own feelings and reactions in response to crisis.
Research in Social Work (FRG213F)
The goal of this course is to prepare students in the utilisation of research in their future role as a social workers. Research ethics and the role of evidence based knowledge with individuals, groups and communities are presented. Students learn to construct a research question supported by theories and create a research proposal. The students are given instruction in the critical analysis of other research and research methods in the field of social work.

MA Thesis in Social Work (FRG442L)
Professional qualifications in Social Work is completed with a 30 ECTS research project under the supervision of a permanent teacher at the Department of Social Work and in certain cases a co-supervisor or expert.
The aim of the master's project is to provide the student with training in designing, planning, developing and carrying out research projects in social work, learning to take into account the limitations resulting from the use of methods, technology, scientific ethics and rules for personal protection. Students must independently and in written language be able to define their research topic, formulate research questions and hypotheses. Students must present and defend their topic and results orally and in writing.
Practical Training II (FRG401F)
The goal of this seminar is to provide a realistic insight of the social worker. Students are provided with a 16 weeks field work under the supervision and assessment guidance of a qualified teacher practice in an agency providing social work services. The agency provides experiential instruction and learning. Practice is completed in a broad range of settings. This will ensure that skill development and self-knowledge is the focus of learning. Theory will be introduced at the beginning and the term will finish with a conclusion and a conference. A teacher from the faculty of social work at the University of Iceland will visit students during midterm in the field.
