Short-term opportunities abroad for UI students

Students can apply for funding for single courses through the Erasmus+ and Nordplus programmes as well as Aurora.

By offering opportunities for shorter study periods abroad, more students can benefit from completing part of their studies at a partner institution overseas.

Applications for short-term study opportunities are accepted throughout the year. Where applicable, students must submit their applications by the specified deadline.

Applications and Grants

Apply for a Nomination and Grant

  • Most students first apply for a nomination for a course through Ugla. An application for a nomination also serves as an application for a grant.
  • If the host institution does not require nominations, you should apply directly to the institution. Once your application has been accepted, you can apply for a grant through Ugla.

Things to keep in mind

  • Please specify the course you are applying for in the comments field of the online application.
  • If you are applying for more than one course, you must indicate your order of preference.
  • If you have already been accepted to a course, please attach the acceptance letter to your application.

Application Deadlines

  • Applications are accepted throughout the year.
  • Please note that some courses have specific application deadlines.
  • If you are applying independently, the International Division cannot guarantee the processing of applications submitted less than six weeks before the start of the course or teaching period.
  • To follow up on your application, please contact the International Division at shortmobility@hi.is.

  • Applicants must be registered students at the University of Iceland and have paid the registration fee. Exchange students and other visiting students at the University of Iceland are not eligible to apply.
  • Students at all levels of study must be actively enrolled at the University of Iceland. It is not possible to undertake a short-term study mobility after completing your degree programme.
  • There must be an agreement between the University of Iceland and the host institution. The agreement must either be open to all students, be within the applicant’s field of study, or have a clear connection to the applicant’s academic programme.
  • Undergraduate students are only eligible for a grant if they are enrolled in a degree programme of at least 90 ECTS credits. They must have completed at least 30 ECTS credits before the mobility period begins.
  • Graduate students are only eligible for a grant if they are enrolled in a degree programme of at least 60 ECTS credits. There is no minimum requirement regarding completed credits.
  • The student’s faculty must approve the study period abroad. Approval of the application does not automatically mean that the course will be recognised for credit at the University of Iceland.
  • If a faculty has additional requirements regarding short-term mobility, these requirements must be met before the study period begins.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s students may receive only one short-term mobility grant per academic year. Doctoral students may receive one short-term mobility grant per semester, up to a maximum of five grants during their doctoral studies.
  • Please note that undertaking a study mobility during the final semester of a degree programme may delay graduation, as some host institutions issue official transcripts after the University of Iceland’s graduation deadlines.
  • Applicants are generally expected to have a minimum grade average of 6.0. If the host institution requires a higher grade average, that requirement will apply.
  • Students may not participate in a short-term study mobility while simultaneously taking part in another exchange or traineeship mobility arranged through the International Division.
  • If travel originates from a country other than Iceland, students must inform the International Division. The travel grant will be calculated based on the actual point of departure; however, the grant amount cannot exceed the amount that would have been awarded for travel from Iceland.
  • Grants cannot be awarded for study periods taking place in the country where the student is a resident.
  • If a student applies independently for a course that the University of Iceland previously advertised with a specific nomination deadline, the International Division cannot guarantee that the mobility can be funded or that tuition fees, where applicable, can be waived.
  • Students at the University of Iceland may apply for grants for study periods abroad from various funding schemes. A mobility period may not receive funding from more than one grant programme.
  • Students may receive funding more than once during their studies, for example for exchange studies, traineeships and/or single courses. However, the total funded mobility period under Erasmus+/Aurora may not exceed 12 months per study cycle.
  • Students participating in a blended mobility, where part of the programme is completed online, may only receive funding for the on-site component of the host institution abroad.
  • It is the responsibility of students to consult the international coordinator in their faculty regarding the possibility of transfer of credits before applying for a course.

School of Social Sciences

Faculty of Law

  • Undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law may take single courses at partner universities abroad. However, the study period cannot be recognised for credit towards a degree at the University of Iceland.
  • Master’s students must apply separately if they wish to have single courses recognised as part of their degree programme. Applications should be submitted to the Faculty of Law’s Teaching and Academic Affairs Committee. Applicants must include a course description (syllabus) containing information on course content, reading materials, teaching methods and assessment.

Faculty of Business Administration

  • Students are not permitted to take a course that is equivalent to a course they have already completed, or will complete at the University of Iceland after the study period abroad.

School of Humanities

Icelandic as a Second Language

  • Students who have completed at least 60 ECTS credits in a Bachelor's degree programme may apply for a short-term mobility period (5–30 days).
Before applying for an exchange opportunity through the application portal in Ugla, students must consult the Head of Programme regarding their course selection.

The aim of the International Division is to provide as many students as possible with opportunities for study abroad while ensuring that cooperation agreements are utilised effectively. The International Division reserves the right to allocate places at host institutions among applicants and to reject applications if a student does not meet the requirements of the course in question.

If it becomes necessary to select between applicants for the same course, the following rules apply:

  1. Priority is given to complete applications submitted before the advertised application deadline. An application is not considered complete until all required supporting documents have been received.
  2. Applicants who have previously received funding for a short-term mobility during the same study cycle are not given priority. This rule does not apply if the applicant has progressed to a new study cycle, for example from a Bachelor’s to a Master’s programme or from a Master’s programme to doctoral studies. The more grants a student has received at the same study level, the lower their priority.
  3. Priority is given to students at the study level for which the course is advertised.
  4. If a course is open to all study levels, Master’s students are given priority over undergraduate students. Doctoral students are not given priority in the allocation of places on courses advertised as open to all study levels.
  5. If applicants are at the same study level, the following rules apply:

If the difference in completed credits is less than 30 ECTS, academic transcripts and academic performance rankings will determine priority. If applicants have comparable academic records, places will be allocated by lottery in the presence of witnesses.

If the difference in completed credits is 30 ECTS or more, academic transcripts and academic performance rankings will determine priority only if there is a difference of at least one full grade point in the applicants’ grade averages (e.g. 6.5 and 8.0). In such cases, the student with the higher grade average will be nominated. If applicants have comparable academic records, places will be allocated by lottery in the presence of witnesses.

  6. No more than half of the available places may be allocated to students from the same degree programme and study level. This rule applies when there are four or more places available at the host institution, the course is interdisciplinary, and demand exceeds the number of available places.
  7. Students who have already received a conditional grant offer for another course during the same academic year (Bachelor’s and Master’s students) or the same semester (doctoral students) are placed at the bottom of the priority list and are not eligible to receive funding for an additional mobility period.

  • Students may apply for an Erasmus+ grant for a short-term mobility period (5–30 days) at one of the University of Iceland’s partner universities in Europe.
  • For bachelor's and master's students, Erasmus+ short-term mobility must be a blended mobility, meaning that it must include both an on-site component at the host institution and a virtual component completed online. The on-site component must be no shorter than five days and no longer than 30 days. The virtual component must involve the student's active participation. Independent study or take-home examinations do not fulfil the Erasmus+ requirements for the virtual component.
  • For bachelor's and master's students, the course undertaken at the host institution must award at least 3 ECTS credits in total, including both the on-site and virtual components.
  • Doctoral students may participate in a short-term mobility period without a virtual component.
  • For doctoral students, the workload completed during the mobility period abroad must correspond to at least 3 ECTS credits.

Courses in Svalbard
Students may, for example, participate in summer courses or intensive courses. It is also possible to apply for courses offered by UNIS (The University Centre in Svalbard). Students interested in applying for courses in Svalbard should contact the International Division for further information.

Application deadlines for Nordplus grants for single courses are twice a year:

15 April – for courses taking place between June and December
15 November – for courses taking place between January and May

Applications may also be submitted after the deadline. In such cases, applicants must send an email to outgoing.europe@hi.is once the application has been submitted. Applications received after the deadline are not prioritised for funding.

Required Documents
Applications must include a course description and a link to the host institution’s website clearly stating how the course is organised, its duration, and the number of ECTS credits awarded. Students must also contact the international coordinator within their faculty to confirm whether the course can be recognised as part of their degree programme at the University of Iceland.

In addition, students must upload an official transcript with class ranking (in English) as part of the online application. This document can be obtained from the Service Desk at the University Centre or through Uglan under My Uglan – Certificates and Academic Records.
Master’s students who have not yet received any grades within their master’s programme must submit a transcript from their bachelor’s studies.

Nordplus Learning Agreement
Students must obtain approval from their faculty regarding the recognition of the course at the University of Iceland. All Nordplus students are required to submit a Learning Agreement before departure.

Nordplus Grant Amounts
The Nordplus grant consists of:

  • A travel grant of up to €660.
  • A subsistence grant of up to €250 per month.
  • Funding is also available for shorter mobility periods of at least 5 days, in which case the subsistence grant is €70 per week.
