The University of Iceland is ranked among the 300 best universities in the world in humanities according to a new list from Times Higher Education. The University has thus been placed on nine Times Higher Education subject rankings this year underlining the overall strength of the University.

The assessment takes all major research areas in the humanities into consideration, such as language studies, literature, linguistics, history, archaeology, philosophy, theology, architecture, and various art forms. The lists are based on an evaluation of the same performance indicators as in the overall evaluation, looking at things like research, international research influence, teaching reputation, the learning environment and international outlook. The subject rankings also consider research and publication conventions within the subject. The evaluation comprises over 600 universities worldwide. The University of Iceland is ranked between 251-300 this year; same as last year.

The Times Higher Education has been publishing rankings of the best universities worldwide in subject-specific rankings as well as their list of the overall strength of universities. The University has been included in the latter for a decade and has been included in several Times Higher subject rankings in the past few years.  Last year the University made nine rankings from Times Higher Education for the first time and again this year. This is quite a feat, as competition in the international scientific community is fierce.

According to Times Higher Education the University of Iceland has been ranked on the following lists this autumn.

151 - 175 best in the field of life sciences
200 - 250 best in the field of physical sciences
200 - 250 best in the field of engineering and technology

301 - 400 best in the field of educational sciences
401 - 500 best in the field of clinical, pre-clinical and health

The University is furthermore placed on 14 ShanghaiRanking Consultancy rankings of the best universities worldwide in subject-specific rankings published earlier this year. Times Higher Education and ShanghaiRanking Consultancy are generally considered to produce the most prestigious and influential rankings of this kind. The University of Iceland is the only Icelandic university to be included by both.

The University of Iceland is, furthermore, ranked in place 50 on a new list from Times Higher Education for countries with rapidly growing economies.

All these lists confirm the overall strength the University has acquired through international scientific collaboration in the past two decades. The success has laid the foundation of numerous collaborative opportunities with international universities, both in the field of scientific research, teaching and student and staff exchange.
