Covid, sanitizer, flag with University of Iceland logo

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (7 October 2020):

"Dear students and colleagues,

The government has once again introduced stricter public health restrictions in the Reykjavík area in order to combat the rapid spread of COVID-19. Now we must stand united and cooperate with the new rules, without exception.

  • The physical distancing rule at the University of Iceland has been changed from one metre to two.
  • It remains the case that a maximum of 30 people are permitted in a classroom at any one time, but we strongly urge people to wear masks. This will enable us to continue practical teaching in University buildings.
  • We encourage online teaching and advise people to avoid coming to campus unless strictly necessary. We also stress that all meetings should take place online.
  • Those who are able to work from home should do so, in consultation with their immediate superior.
  • People are also urged to stay at home as far as possible while we get the spread of the virus under control.

Although we have experienced a similar situation earlier this year, this is not something that we are accustomed to. In such circumstances, it is vital not to neglect our mental wellbeing. We should not hesitate to ask for support or to offer support to those closest to us.

I would also urge staff and students to take good care of their physical health and remind you that remote exercise classes are available for staff while the University Gym is closed.

Together, we managed to slow the spread of the virus earlier this year and together we will weather this storm as well.

We must all take care, do what we can to prevent infection, respect the physical distancing rule, and remember to thoroughly wash and disinfect our hands. Make sure to use masks correctly.

I wish you all the very best, dear students and colleagues.

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector"
