Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (20 September 2020):

"Dear students and colleagues,

Unfortunately, the spread of the corona virus in Iceland has intensified, which has led to wider recommendations from the epidemiological authorities.

The buildings of the University of Iceland are still open to you all on Monday. But to ensure our work continues, it is very important to pay attention to individual epidemics, wash your hands very thoroughly and spray. Respect the 1 metre rule.

I would like to encourage everyone, students, teachers and other staff members, to use protection masks in university buildings, especially when the 1 metre distance limit cannot be reached and when the air quality is low. Masks will be distributed in university buildings at the beginning of the week or as soon as possible.

I also want to encourage teachers when possible to further increase electronic teaching because of the recommendations of epidemiological authorities. Emphasis will continue to be placed on new students having the option of on-site study where possible in the current circumstances.

Screening tests are still available from deCODE genetics. I urge those of you who have not yet taken part in the screening tests to book an appointment. The invitation code is HI_COVID

Follow the rules of civil protection without exception, dear students and colleagues. Be at home without a hitch if you notice the slightest symptom. Download the infection control app from the Medical Director of Health.

These actions are in response to the current wave of upheavals. Let's continue to stand together with the determination we have made so far. In this way, we ensure our operations and a stronger community.

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector"
