Trausti Valsson, professor emeritus of planning, environment and global warming at the University of Iceland, has put all the books he has written online so anyone can access them for free.
Professor Valsson has published 14 books on design and planning, four of which are in English. The books cover a wide variety of topics, but planning in Iceland and future- and environmental matters are at the core.
Professor Valsson says he became interested in the subject matters of the books in his studies, but he boasts having both an architecture/planning degree from the University of Technology in Berlin and a doctorate in environmental planning from the University of California, Berkeley, USA.
Valsson taught planning at the University of Iceland for nearly three decades. “In planning it is important to know how things have evolved, so I wrote about planning history in the beginning. In the 1990s, environmental concerns started to come on strong, and I started to include them in my books and articles. Planning needs to look at the broader framework, so I wrote a book about my ideas about an Iceland-Plan (1987) and later on future ideas, e.g. in regional affairs in Iceland. As the Millennium approached, I wrote a book on a vision of the future that I think need to be taken in account. This also appears in the book “How the World will Change – with Global Warming” (2006). Here I studied global developments and the impact of global warming on planning, both globally and in individual regions, especially the Arctic. The last book, “Shaping the Future”, which was published in 2016, is the story of my professional carrier,” says Valsson.
