The University of Iceland is placed between 126-150 over the best universities in the world in the field of life sciences; and in place 176-200 in the field of clinical, pre-clinical and health according to the magazine Times Higher Education. This was revealed today when the Times Higher published three new lists in specific fields of study.
The University of Iceland has made five of the Times Higher Education lists of the world's best universities in specific fields this autumn. Besides the lists published today on life sciences and clinical, pre-clinical and health, the University was among the best in the fields of engineering and technology; humanities; and social sciences. Earlier this autumn the Times Higher Education published an overview of the world's best universities worldwide 2017-2018 where the University of Iceland was ranked between 201-250.
When evaluating individual fields of study the same operational factors are considered as when the University as a whole is evaluated; i.e. research activity, international impact, teaching, and study environment. Research and publishing traditions in each field of study receive special attention.
"This is very pleasant to hear and, in fact, in accordance with the tremendous work and science contribution from the faculties of the School of Health Sciences. Health research is challenging, as is clinical research. The work at the School of Health Sciences is performed both within and outside of the University of Iceland as the nature of the programmes and research in these subjects requires close collaboration with hospitals and other research institutes. Our collaborators are, thus, also to thank," says Inga Þórsdóttir, Professor and Dean of the School of Health Sciences.
The evaluation of Times Higher Education of the best universities in the field of life sciences is comprised of the University's performance in various subjects; biology, sport and health sciences, agriculture, and veterinary medicine. Five hundred universities are on the Times Higher Education list in this field and the University of Iceland is placed between 126-150.
The evaluation within the field of clinical, pre-clinical and health is comprised of the various subjects; medicine, odontology and other health sciences; but as with life sciences the list covers 500 universities. The University of Iceland is placed between 176-200 over the world's best universities in this field.
"This is an excellent result and a confirmation that life and health sciences at the University of Iceland are among the best in the world. The University has extremely dynamic collaborators in this area both abroad and in Iceland. I congratulate all University staff and students as well as our collaborators on this important achievement," says Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland.
Times Higher Education has yet to publish one list this season; on natural sciences.
