University of Iceland, Main building

The magazine Times Higher Education published their list of the world's best universities in the field of engineering and technology today where the University of Iceland is placed between 176-200. This is the third THE list published on the world's best universities in specific fields that includes the University of Iceland; and the one where we rank the highest.

Earlier this autumn the Times Higher Education published an overview of the world's best universities worldwide 2017-2018 and the University of Iceland was ranked between 201-250. The magazine publishes, furthermore, lists of the world's best universities in specific fields of study and a few of them have already been issued.

The evaluation of Times Higher Education of the best universities in the field of engineering and technology is comprised of various engineering subjects; including electrical, mechanical, industrial and chemical engineering in addition to general engineering subjects. There are 500 universities included in the recently published list and the University of Iceland is placed between 176 and 200 as mentioned above.

"It is a great honour to receive this recognition of the strong position of the field of engineering internationally. Our engineering faculties educate people who are vital for Iceland as research in engineering tackles current challenges, both in Icelandic and international context. Furthermore, this strong international position reflects the fruitful collaboration between the University's engineering faculties with numerous collaborators in Icelandic industry; this strengthens both our students and our research," says Sigurður Magnús Garðarsson, Dean of the University of Iceland's School of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

When evaluating individual fields of study the same operational factors are considered as when the University as a whole is evaluated; i.e. research activity, international impact, teaching, and study environment. Research and publishing traditions in each field of study receive special attention.

"The University of Iceland has an important role in Icelandic society and is primarily funded by Icelandic taxpayers. The University's ranking among the 200 best in engineering and technology is an important acknowledgement of the University's operations, especially considering the fierce international competition. I congratulate all Icelanders, University staff and students on this important achievement," says Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland.

The Times Higher Education list of the foremost universities in the world in the field of engineering and technology is the third list for specific fields of study that the University of Iceland makes. The other two are in the fields of humanities and social sciences. The evaluation lists are among the most influential and prestigious in their field and show the international strength of the University of Iceland across a range of subjects.

More lists from Times Higher Education are due later this autumn on the universities that excel in life sciences, psychology, medicine, and public health sciences on the one hand, and natural sciences on the other.
