The University of Iceland ranks in 222 place over the best universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, not around the 270th. This was revealed when an error in status calculation of several universities was discovered. The University also moves up the list of best universities in the Nordic countries.

Times Higher Education published a list of the best universities in the world 2015-2016 last autumn and according to the initial evaluation the University of Iceland was ranked between 251 to 275 on the list. More detailed calculations showed that the University of Iceland was ranked around the 270th place.

Times Higher Education’s evaluation covers numerous operational factors in the universities, including research activity, international impact, teaching, and study environment. Those responsible for the list recently contacted the University of Iceland and pointed out that a mistake had been made in calculating a few of these factors last autumn. This had influenced the placement of several academic institutions on the list, including the University of Iceland. Its place on the list was currently between 200 and 250; or more specifically the 222 place. This means that the University moves up almost 50 places on the list. Furthermore, this means that the University of Iceland is now placed in the 13th seat on the list of the best universities in the Nordic countries according to Times Higher Education.

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland is pleased with the results and ascribes the university’s success to the relentless and ambitious work of university staff and students. “This is a great acknowledgement for all those that work here and study. Furthermore, the university has excellent partners in Iceland enhancing its quality such as Landspitali – University Hospital, deCode, the Icelandic Heart Association, and Matís,” says Jón Atli Benediktsson and points out that the outcome is important for Iceland’s reputation and that of other Icelandic universities.

Times Higher Education has published a list of the 400 best universities in the world for over a decade. This list is one of the most prestigious of its kind. The University of Iceland has had a place on the list since its centennial in 2011. The list and the basis of the evaluation can be found on the Times Higher Education website. https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings
