The University of Iceland celebrates the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Iceland by hosting an open conference today:  Power and democracy in Iceland – 100 years later. The conference focuses on democratic aspirations, participation and diversity in Iceland now 100 years after suffrage became universal. In connection with the conference, Faculty of Political Science of the University of Iceland is awarding an honorary degree to Dr. Anna G. Jónsdóttir, Senior Professor in Gender Studies at University of Örebro in Sweden.

The conference will be conducted in English and Icelandic. Free entrance – everybody is welcome.

13:00-15:00 Power and Democracy in Iceland – 100 Years Later

  • Reflecting on the Representation of Women in Politics: Dr. Sarah Childs, Professor of Politics and Gender at Bristol University.
  • Men and the suffrage in Iceland: Dr. Sigríður Dúna Kristmundsdóttir, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Iceland.
  • Margbreytileiki, þátttaka og lýðræðishugmyndir 100 árum síðar (e. Diversity, Participation and Democratic Aspirations 100 Years Later).  Panel discussions with participants of the Power and Democracy Study project, with the School of Social Sciences, University of Iceland.

15:30-17:00 Honorary Doctorate Degree Ceremony

  • The Vox Feminae women´s choir performs
