Women going on strike 2023 walking from the University to join other women

Announcment from the Rector of the University of Iceland

"Dear students and staff at the University of Iceland,

Friday 24 October is the Women’s Strike, an action with a history going back 50 years and part of the Women’s Year 2025. Women and non-binary people are encouraged to go on strike from paid and unpaid work.

Meetings and demonstrations will take place across the country, including in central Reykjavík where the programme will start in the afternoon. See more details about the events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/688410640371127. There will also be a seminar about the issues facing women of foreign origin on the Icelandic job market: https://www.facebook.com/events/2174633179691556.

The University of Iceland supports the Women’s Strike and I encourage female and non-binary students and employees to take part. Equality is one of the University of Iceland’s core values. Your absence from work will not affect your wages or official attendance record.

I ask all managers to make arrangements to ensure that women and non-binary people are able to take part in the programme of events on 24 October and hope that students and other employees will understand that teaching and services may be disrupted.

Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir Rector"
