University centre, moon in the sky, lights reflecting from the window

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (9 October 2020):

"Once again, above all this week I feel gratitude for your remarkable tenacity, dear students and colleagues.

There were no guarantees that we would be able to continue our work at the University in the challenging circumstances we are now facing. Dear students, please do not lose heart. Keep studying, watching lectures, attending classes and taking part in online discussions – and do not hesitate to seek help if you need it. We will all be doing our utmost to support you through these uncertain times.

We are all aware of the gravity of this pandemic and are reminded to follow strict infection prevention measures multiple times a day. It is only natural for people to become jaded and anxious when faced with such relentless adversity. Nevertheless, it is only with a united effort that we will quell this wave. So again I ask you, please take care, keep your distance, use protective masks and wash your hands thoroughly and regularly. No activities are currently permitted in University buildings unless the Chief Epidemiologist's rules are followed to the letter.

In such circumstances, it is absolutely vital that each and every one of us remembers not to neglect our physical and mental health. Seek support immediately if you feel anxious or unhappy and support those around you as best you can. I also encourage you all to take a look at these helpful tips compiled by psychologists at the University.

Earlier this week, I held a meeting for all staff to share information about what is going on at the University of Iceland. A recording of the meeting is available here (in Icelandic only).
As the days grow shorter, slowly and inexorably, each morning is somehow so precious. Let's celebrate the daylight while it lasts, not least this coming weekend, dear students and colleagues. The autumn colours are still out in all their glory and we are lucky to be able to enjoy nature in the city itself and all around its outskirts.

Have a good weekend.

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector"
