Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (15 January 2021):
"Dear students and colleagues,
Teaching is now underway at all schools and everything is going well. I would like to thank you all, not least our new students, for your understanding and flexibility in these unusual times. The start of a university degree is a major milestone and, under the current circumstances, you may have more questions than normal. I would like to remind you, dear new students, that the University website contains useful information on your studies and services available to you. Answers to other important questions can be found on the University's COVID-19 website.
It is important to us to maintain the quality of study programmes under these challenging circumstances. We also strive to foster the spirit that usually characterises people's time at the University of Iceland. Hopefully we will also see positive changes to the organisation of teaching and learning this semester; the vaccination programme that began recently has inspired hope that universities can gradually start getting back to normal.
This week, the public health restrictions were relaxed. In accordance with the current restrictions, teaching and learning is permitted in all University buildings, subject to the following rules:
- The maximum number of staff and students permitted in one space is 50.
- The minimum distance permitted between people is 2 metres.
- Mixing between student groups is not permitted and several buildings have therefore been divided into infection control zones.
- Masks are required in any situation where people cannot stay 2 metres apart.
- Practical teaching and clinical training are permitted on condition that students and teaching staff use protective masks.
- Staff may move between groups, but must follow strict measures to prevent infection.
- Limits on gatherings do not apply in common spaces (entrances, toilets and corridors) if people wear protective masks.
- The University Gym will reopen on Monday. Only timetabled group sessions will be available, for a maximum of 20 people. You must register for group sessions in advance through the 'Events' section of Ugla. Further information here.
- The gym changing rooms are closed and also the weights room, in accordance with official guidance on the operation of health and fitness centres due to COVID-19.
- Háma is open for take away food.
Preparation is underway for the graduation ceremony which is still scheduled to take place on Saturday 20 February. Further information will be forthcoming on the exact arrangements, in accordance with the current public health restrictions.
I urge you all, dear students and colleagues, to take a look at the information on the University's COVID-19 website.
Let's take care and do what we can to prevent infection.
Have a good weekend.
Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector
