Aurora is a network of closely collaborating, research-intensive European universities working to shape the future of higher education. Abdullah, a master’s student in Computer Science, and Grace A. Kakama, a PhD student in Environment and Natural Resources Management, attended the Aurora annual conference, last May, in their role as Aurora Student Ambassadors. In this article, they discuss their experience.

Celebrating history and innovation in Naples
The University of Iceland marked a significant milestone by sending its first-ever Aurora Student Ambassadors to the annual conference. The conference provided us with a platform to engage in enriching discussions, workshops, and cultural exchanges, contributing to the success of Aurora’s mission. Our presence marked an important step forward in fostering connections across borders and advancing global education initiatives.
During the opening ceremony, Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland and then President of Aurora, highlighted three core pillars essential to all institutions: cooperation, internationalization, and social impact. His address underscored the conference's focus on fostering collaborative efforts, advancing global engagement, and making meaningful contributions to societal well-being.
The conference was hosted by Federico II University, the world's oldest state-supported institution for higher education and research, and Naples, the vibrant host city, mirrored the conference's theme of innovation built upon a rich historical foundation. Established by Greek settlers in the 8th century BC, Naples boasts a legacy that transcends millennia. This dynamic interplay between the past and present added a unique layer to the conference experience; reminding participants that the future of education is shaped by a deep understanding of our collective history.
Shaping the future of European education
The main agenda of the conference centred on fostering joint international programmes and facilitating discussions on how European alliances enhance universities' social impact, stakeholder engagement, and promotion of social entrepreneurship. Key topics included exploring citizen science and participatory democracy as mechanisms for societal engagement and innovation in education. Throughout various sessions, participants emphasised the pivotal role of European alliances in driving societal change and fostering innovation in teaching and learning practices.
A commitment to sustainability
Continuing the momentum towards a more sustainable future, the conference built upon previous Aurora commitments. A significant highlight was the signing ceremony for a comprehensive sustainability plan by participating institutions. This plan outlines a collaborative approach to reducing the environmental footprint of Aurora universities. Key elements include shared efforts, a unified commitment to emissions reduction, and the implementation of common sustainability actions. This coordinated effort signifies Aurora's dedication to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within all the member universities.
The Student Perspective: A Crucial Voice
Another significant highlight was the student plenary session, which proved an immensely valuable element of our experience. The session emphasised the crucial role of student engagement within Aurora, highlighting how student commitment contributes to the network's goals. Discussions centred on students' active participation in various Aurora task teams, showcasing their contributions and initiatives across different projects. The session also addressed challenges faced by students and task teams outlining collaborative efforts with partner institutions to overcome these obstacles.
A lasting impact
Attending the Aurora Annual Conference in Naples was a transformative experience for us, marking a significant milestone in our academic and professional journeys. The opportunity to participate as Aurora Student Ambassadors not only broadened our perspectives on international collaboration and higher education but also strengthened our commitment to contributing meaningfully to global academic initiatives. This conference has equipped us with invaluable insights, new connections, and a renewed sense of purpose as ambassadors for educational excellence and cultural exchange within Aurora.
