Jón Atli editor-in-chief of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers‘ publishing arm

Jón Atli Benediktsson, professor of electrical and computer engineering and former Rector of the University of Iceland, has taken over as editor-in-chief of the book publishing arm of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organisation.

Jón Atli assumed the position of editor-in-chief at the start of the year but has been part of the editorial team since 2020. IEEE Press publishes scholarly books on electrical engineering, computer science, and related subjects, as well as reference works. IEEE Press publishes in partnership with John Wiley and Sons, a large publisher of science journals and books, under the imprint Wiley-IEEE.

The role of editor-in-chief is to work with the editorial team and IEEE Press and Wiley’s staff to select books for publishing within the aforementioned subject fields. “IEEE Press publishes around 75-100 books per year, including monographs, edited volumes, textbooks and large reference works. The books are written by leading experts and typically cover the latest topics related to IEEE’s fields of interest. The books are published either as standalones or as part of a book series,” Jón Atli explains.

IEEE has over 500,000 members worldwide and is dedicated to developing new technological solutions for the benefit of humanity. In addition to publishing, the organisation hosts conferences and offers various kinds of training and courses for its members.

Jón Atli is highly respected worldwide in his field, as evidenced by his being listed for 8 years running as one of the most influential researchers in the world by Clarivate Analytics. Jón Atli is at the forefront of remote sensing and digital image analysis, which involves extracting data from digital images captured by planes, drones, and satellites. By extracting data from these images, it is possible to highlight changes on Earth’s surface, e.g., in connection with retreating glaciers and the distribution of sea ice, the destruction and distribution of forests and vegetation, and lava flows during volcanic eruptions.
