Water damages in University centre

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (24 January 2021):

"Dear Students and Colleagues,

People have worked diligently on our behalf all weekend at the University Center (Háskólatorg) and in Gimli to dry and clean in order to get everything in as good a condition as possible after the flood on Thursday morning. The work has been successful.

It was possible yesterday to get electricity again on all floors of Gimli due to the hard work of electricians. Internet connection has also been established at the building. Therefore, there is nothing to prevent regular activities starting tomorrow, Monday, on the 2nd and 3rd floor in Gimli. However, the ground floor will continue to be closed due to ongoing operations along with the ground floor at the University Center.

Unfortunately, it has taken longer to dry the floor in the Student Cellar than was initially expected. It will open again at 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

Háma and the University Bookstore will be open tomorrow.

Once again I want to thank everyone who have helped with the repairs and prevention of further damages this week and weekend for a great job under difficult conditions.

Best wishes to you all in the week ahead,

Jón Atli Benediktsson, rektor"
