graduation at Hólar

A graduation ceremony took place at the University of Iceland at Hólar last Friday, 9 October. It was a new chapter in the University's history when 26 graduates received their diplomas from the University of Iceland at Hólar, becoming the first to graduate under the new name.

Students, families and staff celebrated this milestone at a festive ceremony at Hólar í Hjaltadal. The students graduated in aquaculture and fish biology, rural tourism, and event management.

This graduation was not only a milestone for the students themselves but also for the university. This was the first time students graduated within the University system as an affiliated institution of the University of Iceland.
Hólmfríður Sveinsdóttir, Dean of the University of Iceland at Hólar, emphasised in her address that the group now held a special place in history. The students had been a part of an important transition and would always be the first to graduate from the University of Iceland at Hólar.

Despite changes to the institution’s structure, its mission remains unchanged: to create and share knowledge, conduct research and foster innovation, and serve society and industry, with a particular emphasis on its areas of expertise and its role in communities across the country.

Education with a societal impact

In her address, Hólmfríður also emphasised the importance of educating people in fields that are vital to Icelandic society. Aquaculture and fish biology, tourism, and event management are among the fields that require educated individuals, people who can base their decisions on knowledge, tackle complex assignments, and seek novel solutions.

Education at Hólar has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1106. The University of Iceland at Hólar thus builds on a strong tradition and a solid foundation, while looking to the future through the continued development of specialised higher education and research.
