Leaders from conflict zones, international organisations, NGOs, and academia will participate in an international symposium on Women, Peace, and Security, on Monday, 10 November, in the UI Ceremonial Hall.
The occasion is the quarter-century anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. The symposium, which runs from 5 pm to 7 pm (17:00–19:00), will also be streamed and is being held concurrently with the Women Leaders Global Forum taking place in Harpa from 10–12 November.
The symposium is hosted by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Iceland chapter of the Nordic Women Mediators Network, the GRÓ International Gender Equality Studies Training Programme at the UI School of Humanities, the UI Institute of International Affairs, UN Women Iceland, and the United Nations Association of Iceland.
UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security marked a turning point, as it recognised the importance of women's participation in peace processes, their protection during conflict, and the integration of gender perspectives into security matters.
The symposium in the Ceremonial Hall aims to provide a platform for international dialogue among governments, the academic community, international organisations, and grassroots movements. It affirms Iceland's continued leadership in the fields of equality, peace, and human rights, as well as its role as an advocate for Resolution 1325 over the past two decades. More than half of the UN member states have developed a National Action Plan to implement Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. Iceland has developed its fourth National Action Plan, and the symposium is part of its implementation.
At the symposium, leaders from conflict zones, international organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and the academic community will participate in a discussion about the diverse experiences of women’s involvement in security issues. They will also discuss the diverse experiences of women’s involvement in peace and security, focusing on their roles within the international system and their participation in conflict prevention, peace negotiations, and post-conflict reconstruction.

The symposium is open to all; however, registration is required.
