Jón Atli Benediktsson, rector of the University of Iceland, and Dag Rune Olsen, rector of the University in Tromsø, signed a cooperative agreement between the two universities this week that covers research, teaching and student and staff exchange. The agreement was signed in the University of Tromsø's Main Building.

Collaboration between the two universities has been increasing of late; reflected in the number of scientific articles academics at the two universities have published jointly. The universities already collaborate closely in the University of the Arctic and The Arctic Academy for Social and Environmental Leadership, where emphasis is placed on cultivating students' leadership in the Arctic and their abilities to develop creative solution from an interdisciplinary perspective. Academics from both universities are, furthermore, involved in teaching in a brand new edX course: Paths to Peace and Conflict: From the body to the International.

The new collaboration is structured in the agreement which pertains to development of joint research projects, courses, conferences and meetings, student and staff exchanges, and joint use of research infrastructure.

The cooperative agreement is valid for five years and work on the execution of it is ongoing.
