The University of Iceland now offers a new open online course on the edX platform focusing on the pressing challenges facing the Arctic in times of rapid change. The course covers key topics such as Arctic governance and security, the social and economic impacts of climate change, and community-based adaptation to environmental shifts in the region. Emphasis is placed on developing participants’ leadership skills and equipping them with practical tools to communicate their research effectively. The teaching team includes scholars from the University of Iceland, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and the University of Greenland.
The course is titled Social and Environmental Leadership in the Arctic and is part of the ARCADE project, which has been funded by the Erasmus+ programme for the past three years. As part of this initiative, two previous interdisciplinary 10-month courses were offered for master’s and doctoral students, focusing on innovative approaches to Arctic challenges. These courses included three week-long in-person modules in Iceland, Norway, and Greenland, combined with online lectures and workshops, and concluded with student participation at the Arctic Circle Assembly.
We are pleased to announce that the ARCADE project team has recently received renewed funding from Erasmus+ for the next three years, ensuring the continued offering of interdisciplinary courses on Arctic issues—now with the added participation of the University of the Faroe Islands (Fróðskaparsetur Føroya).
