Language used in the Webinar: Icelandic
Lecturer: Guðrún Dröfn Whitehead, Assistant Professor in Museology, in the School of Sciences, Faculty of Sociology, Anthropology and Folkloristics in the University of Iceland.
Description: From the beginning, museology has offered the option to study remotely. Until 2015, the proportion of on-campus and remote students was fairly equal. Still, from then on, the number of remote students increased across departments at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Iceland. In 2014, Guðrún compiled a report assessing the status of distance learning in the program. The findings highlighted the need to address the needs of remote students better and evaluate the types of distance learning available. The main issue was that the majority of students were enrolled in remote learning, while teaching methods were primarily designed for on-campus education.
In light of these findings, the decision was made to design the museology program entirely based on the principles of distance education to better serve the needs of most students. Since the fall of 2016, all core courses in museology have been offered exclusively through distance learning. The aim has been to provide diverse teaching methods in lectures and assignments.
This lecture will introduce the distance learning program, discuss its advantages and challenges, and explore ideas for the future of the program.
