In January 2021, Spain reformed its parental leave system. The paid parental leave for fathers was fully equated with that for mothers. Now, the leave is referred to as “birth and childcare leave”. It is a statutory 16-week leave, remunerated at 100% of previous earnings, with a high ceiling, and non-transferable, to which both parents have access (it is an individual entitlement), if they meet the election criteria (6 months of contributions to Social Security). Lessons from Iceland hugely inspired this reform. Did Spain achieve what it aimed at?
