Before the end of the first semester

Students with Icelandic or Nordic citizenship:

A MS degree from the Faculty of Earth Sciences, or equivalent.

An exemption may be granted to applicants who have completed 90-120 ECTS studies at level 6.1, with a research project worth fewer than 30 ECTS, provided that they include in their application an account of research experience which the standing committee deems equivalent to a 30 ECTS research project.

A three-year theoretical or experimental research-based postgraduate programme of studies in Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. The programme provides at least 180 ECTS and qualifies for the degree of philosophiae doctor, Ph.D. Entrance requirements are a research-based MS degree or a comparable qualification.

The scope of the research project shall be 180 ECTS units. Doctoral studies are governed by special Faculty regulations. The doctoral programme is primarily based on the doctoral candidate's independent research, culminating in the dissertation. However, the Ph.D. committee may require the candidate to complete courses in addition to the research. Credits for courses are then added to the credits required for the dissertation. Ph.D. students with limited background in geology or geophysics will have to take undergraduate and/or graduate courses equivalent to at least 22.5 ECTS credits from the curriculum of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, to be selected in agreement with the supervisor. Previous undergraduate or graduate classes within the fields of Earth Sciences may be evaluated against the 22.5 ECTS credits requirement. Doctoral studies are governed by special Faculty regulations.
