If you are a citizen of an EEA/EFTA country who will be studying in Iceland for an entire academic year or longer, you will need to register as legally resident in Iceland. You can start the application process before you arrive in Iceland by filling out an online application form (A-271). When you arrive, you will need to go to Registers Iceland or the nearest registration office and present your passport and other documents.

If you are staying for one semester only, you need to register at the Service Desk in the University Centre when you get to Iceland.

Bring a passport or another valid ID and you will be given a username and password for Ugla, the University's intranet. You will not be issued with an Icelandic ID number (i. kennitala).

If you are staying for one semester, you just need to provide proof of your own health insurance in order to be covered in Iceland. A European Health Insurance Card from a public health insurance provider is sufficient.

Staying an entire academic year or longer

You can start the application process before you arrive in Iceland by filling out an online application form (A-271). When you arrive, you will need to go to Registers Iceland or the nearest registration office and present your passport and other documents.

Documents you need before arriving in Iceland

Students must obtain the following documents before arrival:

  • Completed online application  
  • Passport or legal travel document 
  • Confirmation of university admission (acceptance letter) 
  • Receipt for registration fee (exchange students are exempt)
  • Documents confirming that you are able to support yourself (see below)
  • Confirmation of health insurance (EHIC and E-104 or S-41)

Documents proving means of support

You will need to prove that you can support yourself financially for a minimum of three months in Iceland by submitting a statement of means of support, confirmation of a scholarship grant, and/or a bank statement.

The minimum financial support for a single person, aged 18 or older, is ISK 239,895 per month.

If you are financially supported by your parents, you will need to submit a statement of means of support, comprising the following three documents:

  • A document from your parents stating that they are financially supporting you. This document must be in English, signed and dated, and attested by two witnesses.
  • Scanned photocopies of your parents’ IDs, such as passports or driver’s licenses.
  • A bank statement from your parents' bank account indicating their names, the currency, and the amount. The statement must be in English and dated within the last 2 weeks.

If you have a scholarship/grant, you will need to provide confirmation in English or Icelandic from the scholarship provider. This document must include the your name as well as the date, currency, and total sum of the grant.

If you want to use your own bank statement as proof of support it must be issued within the past 2 weeks and show your name, the currency, and total amount. The bank statement may be a written statement from the bank.

Health insurance

You must bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and E-104 or S-41 (whichever applies) to Iceland, since you will need to register with Icelandic Health Insurance.

You can only submit an application to Icelandic Health Insurance after you have registered your legal residence in Iceland. If you fail to register, you will be without health insurance for the first six months of residing in Iceland. See further information below under "Upon arrival".

Residence application and supporting documents

Once you have arrived in Iceland, you need go to Registers Iceland and the UI Service Desk with the documents required in order to complete your legal residence registration and your registration at UI.

You will need to send an email containing a completed application (does not need a signature) and a scanned copy of your E-104 or S-41 (whichever applies) to international@sjukra.is.

Changes of housing arrangements

Registers Iceland must be notified of any changes to your housing arrangements. If you have an Icekey (íslykill) or digital certification you can submit form A-251 online. If you are unable to do this online, you will need to go to Registers Iceland and submit the form in person.

After you have submitted A-251 to Registers Iceland, you can apply for an E-104 to bring back to your home country. Fill in an application and send it to international@sjukra.is.

All students who have received income in Iceland, including wages, grants, or other forms of remuneration, must file a tax return to the Directorate of Internal Revenue (RSK) annually and no later than one week before leaving the country. If you are an exchange student, one academic transcript will be sent to your home university. All students can purchase extra copies of academic transcripts at the Service Desk in the University Centre.
