Abstract

Proteins govern nearly all functions of cells and organisms. They vary in size, have different shapes (including no shape), and can change their structure according to their function on different timescales! To answer research questions about proteins, it may be necessary to use a number of biophysical methods, for example, when measuring the binding of one protein to another. In my laboratory, we use a variety of methods to measure the properties and structure of proteins, such as X-ray crystallography, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), microscale thermophoresis (MST), and various high-performance spectroscopic techniques. The main focus has been to understand better the roles and functions of various proteins in metabolic processes and in cancer signaling pathways.
