Abstract

My research lies at the intersection of statistics education, mathematics education, and educational data analysis. I have studied student engagement, achievement, and persistence using statistical modelling, experimental design, and learning analytics, often using large-scale longitudinal and administrative data. This includes studies on the performance of new university students in mathematics and on student social networks to understand links between peer relationships and academic persistence. A central part of my work has been the development and evaluation of adaptive online learning systems, the SmileyTutor, which uses statistical algorithms to personalise practice and feedback. The system has been applied in diverse contexts, including projects in Iceland and Kenya, such as the Education in a suitcase initiative designed for environments with limited internet and power access. In addition to my academic research, I am a co-founder of SmileyCharity, an Icelandic non-profit organisation dedicated to help students in low-income areas to get a university education.
