Learning opportunities for immigrants

Sprettur is an innovative educational program for the inclusion and integration of immigrants into higher education. The project belongs to the department of academic affairs at the University of Iceland.

Sprettur aims to promote the participation of greater numbers of immigrants in university as one of the best ways for learning to live together as an intercultural society.

Current and future university students of foreign background are invited to participate in Sprettur to receive extra support in their educational efforts and to cultivate with us a sense of belonging to an intercultural learning community.

Many immigrants deserve the opportunity to experience university life, but they might need a network of support for learning and engaging with the demands of higher education in generative ways within a learning intercultural community.

  • Are you an Icelandic resident of foreign background and would like to engage in higher education and experience university life in Iceland?
  • Are you already in university and would like to be part of a study group, to receive support with assignments and learn from others’ different perspectives?
  • Are you studying in a school to get your graduation permit for entering university and would like extra support for doing homework, studying and connecting with others?
For whom?

There are three kinds of immigrants who can benefit from Sprettur:

  • Current university students of foreign background who would like to participate in study groups and networking, learning and mentoring opportunities, and orientation in navigating university life.
  • Graduating students of upper secondary school (Framhaldskóla) who are motivated to enter university and would like extra help to study and navigate the transition process.
  • Adult immigrants from different educational backgrounds who would like to continue a profession or begin a new one, learn Icelandic better and ascend the educational ladder.
What do Sprettur participants do?

Participants are invited to attend learning and mentoring sessions in study groups on a regular basis, workshops and seminars on different topics and intercultural events.

Participation is voluntary and free of charge, but students are encouraged to be consistent in their pursuit and make good use of the opportunity.
