Sociological Cinema Society presents a special screening of the German-Iranian film The Seed of the Sacred Fig in collaboration with Bíó Paradís Monday 3 March.
Nominated for Best International Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards, the film is set in contemporary Iran and portrays a society at a crossroads. Blending fictional narrative with real footage from the 2022–2023 protests—brutally suppressed by Iranian authorities—it offers a powerful and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
This screening marks the launch of the Sociological Cinema Society, founded by Icelandic scholars. The society aims to:
- Create a platform for critical discussions on society through film.
- Encourage meaningful and enlightening social engagement.
- Highlight the vital role of cultural institutions like cinemas in both individual and societal well-being.
Before the screening, Saeed Shamshirian, an Iranian doctoral student in sociology, will provide a brief introduction (in English), framing the historical context of the film. Afterward, guests are invited to participate in informal discussions about the film and its broader implications in a welcoming atmosphere.
Everyone is welcome!
